Even if this is not your first time dealing with a mouse infestation, knowing you have mice crawling around in your house is not something anybody wants to find out. But it happens to the best of us, and there is nothing to do, but deal with the situation, and do it fast.
Since I have a preference of living in the country, it is inevitable that each new house eventually has a few uninvited guests. Here are the three most common ways to get rid of mice & some tips from someone who has been through it a time …show more content…
or two.
Option 1: Hire a mouse exterminator.
The easiest way to take care of a mouse problem is to call in the experts. This is the best thing to do if you don't like getting your hands dirty, don't have time to deal with the issue or if you just don't know where to start. Another reason people hire an exterminator is when they have tried one of the DIY methods and were not successful, or the mice keep coming back.
I have used a mouse exterminator in the past and was very thankful I did. What I appreciated most about the experience was how much I learned.
Here are just a few of the things I learned.
He identified the areas the mice were entering my home & told me how to secure my home for the future. He also educated me on the best places to place the traps in my home. I learned what mice were capable of (they can climb up the walls, so boxes of cereal in my cabinet were not safe). Typically mice do not travel more than 25 feet to get food unless there is none.
While some people may resist this decision at first, if you get a good exterminator, they will be more than worth in the long run. They will of course get rid of your mice. But the real benefit is when they show you how to prevent mice from entering your home in the future. Here is a great article to make sure you ask all the right questions when interviewing a mouse exterminator to make sure you get the best one.
Option 2: DIY - Getting Rid of Mice using Mouse Traps.
One of the most common ways people use to get rid of mice is to use mouse traps. There are several important steps to take when trying to get rid of mice the DIY method. Here are some tips to help you get rid of mice using mouse traps.
1. Gather your supplies. You will need several mouse traps. I suggest six as a minimum number if you purchase the disposable traps. If you choose the re-usable traps, three is probably fine. Mice travel in groups, so it's unlikely you have just a single mouse. Read the best mouse traps article to help you decide which type of mouse trap is best for you. You will also need bait for the traps. Peanut butter, chocolate, pet food, nuts and seeds are some of the best types of mouse trap bait you can use to lure the mice into your trap.
2. Do a thorough inspection of you house in order to isolate the areas the mice are living. You need to find two places: where they are nesting and where they are getting their food.
3. Thoroughly clean the area where the mice were getting their food. Then place any food previously out in the open, in tight sealed plastic or metal bins. trap.
4.
Place the most mouse traps in the area closest to where the mice nesting. A few should also be placed near their previous food source. Make sure the traps are in an area that the mouse will feel secure enough to enter. The entry point should be next to a wall, and the trap should be placed in a slightly out of the way location. For example, place the mouse trap behind furniture or under the counter against the back wall. They will feel safer in this area and be more likely to enter your trap.
5. Check your traps often and remove the mice as quickly as possible.
Option 3: DIY - Getting Rid of Mice using Poison.
Many people choose to use poison to get rid of mice since they do not want to see or touch the mouse traps. The way most poisons work is to dehydrate the mouse. Ideally they leave your home to go in search of water. The active ingredient in many common mouse poisons is Brodifacoum.
Poison can be effective, but there is a downside.
Follow these precautions and tips when using poison to get rid of mice.
Use the bait stations that include a plastic enclosure. Never use poison outside the
home. If you have children or pets in the home, take additional precautions and make sure neither one has access to the same area where you place the poison
Whichever way you choose to get rid of mice, the most important step is to take action. So pick a method and either start making phone calls to hire that exterminator or begin buying your traps or bait stations right away. If you wait too long, what starts of as just a few mice can easily become a full blown mouse infestation.
