    The revolutions of 1848-9 impacted Austria’s previously dominant political power significantly. With the Austrian chancellor Metternich fleeing from power in March 1848 and revolutions resulting in chaos that threatened the extinction of any future Austrian influence, the crippling state’s main focus was to supress anything that could jeopardize its weakened power even further, rather than establishing any plans to increase dominance. However certain events such as the failure of the Erfurt union, the humiliation at Hesse-Cassel and the meeting at Olmutz tightened Austria’s grasp by an almost transfer of power from Prussia to Austria and enabled it to begin a process of re-establishing previously existing influence and attempt to supress any Prussian political advantages. Eventually Austria’s newly found power would be put to the test as it started to draw up future plans for an even greater Austrian hold than had previously existed prior the upheavals. These plans, such as a ‘zollunion’ and the establishment of alternative custom unions can truly reveal the extent of Austria’s influential survival.…

    The split between Josip Broz Tito, leader of Yugoslavia, and Joseph Stalin, head of the Soviet Union, is arguably one of the most watershed moments in Soviet history. It was a sign of a rising and powerful Yugoslavia, the first break in the Eastern bloc, and inspired a shift in Soviet policy and political thought. Focusing on the timespan from 1941 to 1948, I claim that, though the break between the two leaders was caused by a variety of factors, the root cause was Stalin’s prioritizing of foreign relations with the West. Stalin’s attempts to appease the Western powers went against Tito’s interests in spreading Yugoslavia’s influence. This is particularly true regarding Tito’s involvement in the Greek civil war, and his relations with Albania. It was a shock to Tito, and to the rest of the world, that Stalin decided to placate the West rather than side with Yugoslavia on these matters.1 However, realistically speaking, the Soviet Union was in no position to provoke the Western world post-World War II. Therefore, it is my thinking that the main source of friction between Stalin and Tito stemmed from their disagreements in prioritizing good relations with the West.…

    Western historians, academics, and media sources overwhelmingly paint the Serbs, led by Slobodan Milosevic, as architects of suffering, committing atrocities in Kosovo that necessitated NATO intervention. Serbs are portrayed as xenophobic fascists who caused a “humanitarian crisis,” while the role of the West, in intentionally severing Kosovo from Yugoslavia and Serbia, is rarely mentioned. This essay will demonstrate that the Serbs legitimately feared Serbian expulsion from Kosovo, as well as the separation of Kosovo from the FRY. Serbian nationalism was not the cause of the 1999 Kosovo Crisis. Rather, the KLA, an Albanian paramilitary organization supported by NATO, was used to exacerbate ethnic tensions in Kosovo in order to legitimize a NATO intervention. This conflict occurred in the context of broad Western, particularly U.S., objectives in the Balkans. After describing some relevant history, and providing a synopsis of Western objectives in Yugoslavia, this essay will examine and demonstrate the fraudulent nature of NATO’s justifications for the war and alleged “humanitarian” objectives. Information will be drawn predominantly from research-supported studies of the conflict by well-known academics, news articles from mainstream Western newspapers, and whenever possible, primary sources from U.S. State Department, U.N. and NATO releases, to observers on the ground, journals of forensic investigation, and the Rambouillet Accord itself.…

    One can assume that after Tito’s death in 1980 Serbia abolished Kosovo’s autonomy statute due to the “death” of Tito’s authority - although the official justification of Serbia has been related to the so-called “Amselfeldmyth” of 1389. The Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic polarized namely with that old legend and hence made use of Serbia’s nationalism because of self-seeking reasons in order to promote his political rise. The “Amselfedmyth” was therefore not only a means to an end for Milosevic as a state actor, but also for his personal career. In this case realism could be applied, because according to offensive realists the state’s major interest is to achieve a hegemonic position, which is in this case fulfilled by a greater territory and a distribution of power to the advantages of Serbia with the occupied Kosovo. Serbia as a figurative actor wanted to attain superiority over Kosovo, because it is one of its principal goals of survival to extend their power and territory. This procedure can consequently be seen as an option that resulted from Serbia’s aspiration to power. Otherwise, Serbia would also have had the option to accept Tito’s heritage and Kosovo’s status.…
