Tiny Ripple Of Hope In History
“It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve many others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” (Robert F. Kennedy) Some may say that standing up to the littlest thing is worthless, but little do they know standing up to the smallest thing can make the biggest impact on someone or something else. Throughout history, we’ve seen many men and women stand up for what they believe which causes a tiny ripple of hope. Such as in 1790 in the Haitian Revolution where it was the largest and most successful slave rebellion in the Western Hemisphere. Such as the quote says “Each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve many others, or strikes out against injustice, he send forth a tiny ripple of hope...” Toussaint l’Overture was that man who sent out a ripple of hope when he decided he couldn’t stand being a slave and couldn’t stand how others and himself were being treated. After Toussaint l’Overture …show more content…
I think it is a big part of my life because if I see someone being bullied, I stand up for the victim and it causes a ripple of hope to the victim and to the others that were watching that it is not okay for someone to be bullied. I believe this because I’ve seen my friends stand up for something that is injustice and I see their friends do the same and so on and so forth. Even though there are people out in the world who won’t stand up, there are way more people who would do the right thing which will one day build a current so big that it will sweep down the biggest wall of bullying. In which everyone will stop bully others and everyone will love each other for the way they

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I am here today to encourage my peers and to also challenge my peers. The message I have focused on today is critical for the future is standing up for what is right. The future of humanity depends on our ability to speak and stand up for what we believe in and our values. We must use the youth to help this work and make this society a much more supportive and understanding society to live in. Today, I will discuss three texts that deal with the issue “Standing up for what is right”. These texts are: “WorldShaker” written by Richard Harland, Bob Marley’s song “Get Up, Stand Up” and the song “Caught in the Crowd” written by Kate Miller-Heidke. They will be broken down into detail.…

For many centuries, humanity has evolved through rebellious efforts by history’s greatest role- models. For instance, Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist Minister, led the African- American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s to gain equality and justice for all African Americans who were shunned by the white people in society. Luther was a sapient man who didn’t scare so easily despite the censure consequences that would follow. Martin Luther King Jr. died on April 4, 1968, by assassination, yet his famous “I Have a Dream” speech left a powerful impact on the nation to support his vision that one day we would see ourselves as equal regardless of our color or race. Today, we still remember his nonviolent efforts that gave us hope and a dream to live for and come together as a whole to accomplish what we have wanted for a long time.…

To achieve justice, many individuals over time have needed to challenge the existing, restrictive views of society, views which have been embedded in the culture and views many are unhappy to let go of. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and documentary The Scottsboro Trials - An American Tragedy directed by Barak Goodman and Daniel Anker both feature themes of Social Justice, overcoming prejudice and personal and moral courage.…

A great example of this idea is and can be shown from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. A fragment of his speech that stands out states, “ In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plain of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protests to degenerate into physical violence” (lines 56 - 60) For that reason this statement is an excellent example of how African Americans had to struggle and attempt to acquire freedom and be respected as black men and women of the United States of America. In addition, this statement also proves that people must fight, not with fists but with words and behave in a civilized fashion. An additional sample of the struggle for freedom also comes from Dr. King’s speech, especially when he tells us that, “I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.” This quote supports the idea of struggling for Freedom by stating on how the “sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners” be able to enjoy the magnificence of…

As I to listen to President Obama speech on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma Alabama to mark the 50th Anniversary of “Blood Sunday”. I thought about the question asked What could be more American and If I Agreed with this statement. President Obama throughout his speech single out the most important idea that Americans hold dear which is equal rights not just for some but for all people and sometimes this right must be achieved through struggle. When the President began to look at the life and the achievements of one of his heroes John Lewis who is now a congressman , but back then a twenty five year old cilvil rights leader who led a group of young people from the Brown Chapel to join other civil rights leaders and foot -soldiers to affect social change in America . President Obama in his speech cited several points to remind us of the courage that was necessary to attempt to influence the hearts and minds of a nation. One of the points he focused on and I quote:…

"It is easy to sit up and take notice. What is difficult is getting up and taking action." This quote by Al Batt helps us to realize that when life gets too comfortable, it's easy to get complacent and notice things in the world that are wrong and need to be changed, but people don't always do things about it. When life faces you with horrific tragedies and circumstances this is what causes you to wake up and make a difference. This is something that the citizens of Aplington-Parkersburg learned the hard way.…

This quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr reminds me of current events that are happening in America today. The people of Ferguson, Missouri is as an example of this problem. The people have turned to violence because there was no justice for the killing of an unarmed teen by a police officer. They rioted in the streets, protesting and are demanding for justice of the murder of Michael Brown. The police tried to keep things under control but chaos escalated more and the more time passed without any consequences for the officer who killed Mr. brown.…

Martin Luther King Jr. has made an incredible impact on how our society is today. ‘The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” In this quote it is explaining how people do not stand out as much when they do things they are comfortable doing but when they get throw challenges and they do not give up they are the people that stand out from everyone else. People do not realize that, they think if someone can do something that they cannot then they are all heroic but they could have just been more comfortable doing it then the other person.…

“If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so.” This quote by Thomas Jefferson shows that even though there are risks, stand up for what is right and just. The law is not always the right thing and people who disagree are considered, Civilly disobedient. Civil disobedience is standing up for what is right even if it’s the law. Two men who took a stand for their right is Martin Luther King Jr. and David Thoreau. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham City Jail” is about MLK Jr.’s experience with civil disobedience. MLK Jr. himself, committed an act of civil disobedience and stood up for what was right. As did David Thoreau in “From Civil Disobedience”. These men knew the law and the consequences that would follow, but they understood what would benefit from their act of disobedience.…

This time period separated blacks and whites mind you that she was no intellectual or preacher, she felt that the situation was unjust and had protested in a nonviolent manner. People like Martin Luther King JR. have contributed so much to our society, and have caused a mass amount of change that has changed our world and society for the better. It wasn’t easy though, he had to rebel against everyone in his life and rebel against society and even his place in society. He did it though, and he howled about and criticized all the things that needed to change in order to make America the great place it was meant to be. He was a hero and a renegade, and he helped pave the way for rebellion to be embedded into the American identity. This influence is visible all throughout American Literature and throughout our American Culture, a howl for rebellion is a basis for the identity that lives within everyone, as represented…
