As the narrator, Melinda Sordino, awaits her first day as a freshman at Merryweather High she describes, “the school bus wheezes to my corner” (pg 3). The authors’ use of personification describes the heaviness and panic that is set into the setting. When Melinda arrives at school, she describes, as others’ talk behind her back, the feeling that “words climb up my throat” (pg 5). This personification describes the want to speak up but is silenced by her feelings of anger and disparity. Melinda’s experience so far at high school hasn’t been perfect, but has rather worn her out “my bed is sending out serious nap rays… The fluffy pillows and warm comforter are more powerful than I am” (pg 16). This passage shows that she would…

When they were younger they stuck together and even though they had problems they had faith in their parents. Their parents made them strong and gave them a lot of experiences. Some of which would be being able to pet a real tiger, sleeping under the stars in the desert, and many more. At times it made it seem like the kids were the most wonderful, important part of their parents’ lives, but at others it seemed like they were either too busy to be parents or had better things to do with more important things. When they were younger they believed that the adventures they were going on were actually that, but it was really the family just needing to move to stay away from certain people and unpaid bills. But for all of the good experiences there was also a not so great experience. Their dad was drunk for a lot of their life and when he was drunk he would yell at them and not be a good father. He took Jeannette to a bar and pretty much let a stranger do anything he wanted with her just to get some money. Their mom would have mental break-down type of things and the kids would have to do everything around the house. It seemed like at times their dad would do anything just to get some money for alcohol or who knows what; he would even take the money that the kids needed to buy food and pay the bills, which the kids shouldn’t have to be worried…

What a relief it was then when Samuel turned out to be nothing less than a gentleman; he did not force her to do anything she didn't want to do, and initially left her to herself most of the time. It was quite clear she was more than just a trophy to him, and to some degree, Emily reciprocated those feelings. However, Emily had not loved Samuel; she had loved the stability and quality of life associated with him. Perhaps once it had been something more, but after fifteen years of marriage,…

Mrs. Erlynne, who with Lord Augustus had remained behind to talk with Lord Windermere, discovered the letter Lady Windermere had written, and the thought of that lady’s rash act brought back old memories. Twenty years before, Mrs. Erlynne had written a similar letter to her husband, and had left him and their child for a lover who had deserted her. Her years of social ostracism had made her a stranger to her own daughter. Perhaps, however, she could keep her daughter from making the same mistake. Lady Windermere should never feel the remorse that her mother, Mrs. Erlynne, had known.…

In “On Keeping a Notebook,” Didion writes about the importance in keeping a notebook to record events and personal feelings. She makes it vital to write in the moment that these events, thoughts, and feelings occur. Although, the point isn’t to be accurate or persuasive but rather personal to reflect and reveal what she discovers about herself in the process while still applying rhetorical devices of ethos, pathos, and logos in her essay. Her notebook includes personal experiences written erratically, versus to writing in a diary daily. Some of the entries jotted down have little to no significance to her life and this format enforces the effects to writing in a notebook the same way any average person would. Some of these stories are questionable to her and are used to make a point of how writing in a notebook isn’t about finding a meaning but keeping in touch with yourself in the end.…

In just a matter of months, Sarah has hastily experienced and heard things that she hadn’t thought she would. As she moved into her cousin’s home, she begins to see how the people outside her home assumed many things. Sarah learned about harlots, Quakers, and most importantly witches. At the young age of 9, you would think that a girl would be afraid of such precarious knowledge. But Sarah was different. She embraced it, but masked her enthusiasm to show her cousin that she was mature enough to know these things. “I did not want my cousin to think of me as an infant who did not know how the world moved (pg. 46 Kent).” Sarah accepted these mature thoughts and began to broaden her mind even more. “Through the many years since that time, I have learned that women show their true selves in a different way. Sharing secrets is the way in which women tie themselves together, for it reveals complicity and trust (pg.46 & 47 Kent).” Being with Margaret developed her perceptions about her external world. She is fed with new information and as a hungry child, she eagerly accepts. Sarah and Margaret begin to develop a close bond as well as the whole Toothacker family. In the beginning, it puzzles Sarah to why her direct family loathed the Toothackers. It took time for Sarah to understand why her parents hated them. Sarah, only being a child, loved the Toothakers for their kindness and accepting behavior, but…

Kloss brings out the point that caring figures always come and go--the woman downstairs, the grandparents, the mother, and the nurses. As the child moved from house to house to institution to yet another house, even the environment itself does not remain stable. Kloss goes on to describe the child's vantage point, it seems clear that nothing or no one can be depended on. That these separations are traumatic to Emily can readily be inferred from the fact that they…
