Title: titration method
AIM 1. To titrate sodium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid
Apparatus: * Burette (50cm3) * Pipette (10cm3) * Three (3) Conical Flasks (250cm3) * Two (2) Beakers (250cm3) * Funnel * Wash Bottle * Retort Stand * Boss and Clamp * Pipette filler
Material: * 0.08 mol dm-3 hydrochloric acid * 0.1 mol dm-3 sodium hydroxide * Phenolphthalein indicator
Method: 1. The burette was rinsed twice with a little hydrochloric acid and filled up to just above the zero mark. 2. The acid was then ran out to remove any trapped air in the jet and refilled to above the zero mark. 3. The tap of the burette was opened and the acid was allowed to run out until the bottom of the meniscus was just on the zero mark when viewed at eye level. 4. Any hanging drops from the jet were removed by touching it against the inside of the beaker containing the acid. 5. Using the pipette, sodium hydroxide solution was drawn up to above the graduation mark and the solution was allowed to run into the waste beaker. This process is known as the rinsing of the pipette. 6. Using the pipette, sodium hydroxide solution was drawn up to above the graduation mark and the meniscus was allowed to fall until the bottom of the meniscus was resting on the graduation mark when viewed at eye level. 7. The sodium hydroxide solution was run out from the pipette into a conical flask. After all the liquid had run out from the pipette, the tip of the pipette was touched against the bottom of the flask and withdrawn after 15 seconds. 8. Steps 6 and 7 were repeated using the other conical flask. 9. Two drops of phenolphthalein indicator was placed into each flask. 10. Titrations were performed on the contents of each flask against the acid from the burette. 11. The results were
