Title: titration method

AIM 1. To titrate sodium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid

Apparatus: * Burette (50cm3) * Pipette (10cm3) * Three (3) Conical Flasks (250cm3) * Two (2) Beakers (250cm3) * Funnel * Wash Bottle * Retort Stand * Boss and Clamp * Pipette filler

Material: * 0.08 mol dm-3 hydrochloric acid * 0.1 mol dm-3 sodium hydroxide * Phenolphthalein indicator

Method: 1. The burette was rinsed twice with a little hydrochloric acid and filled up to just above the zero mark. 2. The acid was then ran out to remove any trapped air in the jet and refilled to above the zero mark. 3. The tap of the burette was opened and the acid was allowed to run out until the bottom of the meniscus was just on the zero mark when viewed at eye level. 4. Any hanging drops from the jet were removed by touching it against the inside of the beaker containing the acid. 5. Using the pipette, sodium hydroxide solution was drawn up to above the graduation mark and the solution was allowed to run into the waste beaker. This process is known as the rinsing of the pipette. 6. Using the pipette, sodium hydroxide solution was drawn up to above the graduation mark and the meniscus was allowed to fall until the bottom of the meniscus was resting on the graduation mark when viewed at eye level. 7. The sodium hydroxide solution was run out from the pipette into a conical flask. After all the liquid had run out from the pipette, the tip of the pipette was touched against the bottom of the flask and withdrawn after 15 seconds. 8. Steps 6 and 7 were repeated using the other conical flask. 9. Two drops of phenolphthalein indicator was placed into each flask. 10. Titrations were performed on the contents of each flask against the acid from the burette. 11. The results were

10 ml of acid was used for all the three trials to keep a constant. During the first trial it took 3.700 ml of NaOH to titrate the HCl, in the second trial it took 3.750 ml, and in the third trial it took 3.750 ml. These differences in amounts of NaOH required to titrate the acid led to different molarities being calculated for the NaOH. The first being 0.270M and the other to being 0.267M. In order to calculate the total volume of base used, the readings from the burette from before and after titration were subtracted from each other. The average of the three molarities was found to be 0.268M for NaOH (Figure 2).…

Students are expected to have acquired the knowledge of topic IV and have some experience in handling apparatuses such as pipette, burette, and volumetric flask before carrying out the school-based assessment. This experiment involves two tasks: 1. Dilution of sodium carbonate solution 2. Titration of diluted sodium carbonate solution with a standard solution of hydrochloric acid Students should perform the experiment individually. In order to facilitate large class size, both the side benches and the teacher bench may have to be used. Teachers may distribute the experimental worksheet to students beforehand for reducing the stress of the students during practical assessment. In order to test students’ knowledge of detecting the end point of a titration , an unfamiliar indicator, bromothymol blue, is used. Students have to decide the colour change at the end point. The assessment is mainly based on the written worksheet. Nevertheless, the teacher can walk around to observe student performance and to give some advice. The teacher can take note whether (1) there is a filter funnel on top of the burette when the titration is carried out; (2) there is a white tile beneath the conical flask when the titration is carried out; (3) there is air space between the tap and the tip of the burette; and (4) the students perform the experiment safely.…
