Explore the claim that a consumer society is always a ‘throw-away’

Society

This essay will gather evidence from work conducted in the textbook Making Social Lives (2009). It will look into how society today is viewed a consumer society. It will explore how rubbish is produced more in recent years, and how we as a society tend to get rid of it. The essay will aim to establish why society is always a throw-away society.

In this essay, I will aim to explain what is meant by consumer society, how consumption has increased affluence in recent years and what is meant by "throw away" and why Society is aways throw away.

To start, the word consumer society will be looked into. Consumer society is a society of people that consume in a particular way. This can be in reference to buying goods and services. Consumer society is a title given to a society that is defined by their spending habits not occupation. Social Scientists study how and what people consume.

Hetherington (2009) introduces the chapter by interestingly stating that society today is a consumer society. What occupation people have today is not what defines the society they live in. Instead, how people live their lives and what they purchase is used to identify them as a consumer society. Hetherington starts by giving reference to his high street in The Midlands. Hetherington (2009 Chapter 1 Page.15 Figure 2) displays a picture of Hetherington High Street. It looks like a run-down part of the high street that has a charity shop and second hand shops. Further down the down there is a newly opened Tesco Express. A mile or two further there is an Asda and Sainsburys. Larger supermarkets here have brought in larger consumption and this takes us nicely into Chapter 2.

Allen el at (2009) discusses in Chapter two how supermarkets have changed the way the produce their products. Today supermarkets sell CDS, books, petrol and even different insurances. This is along with

    He does not just give his opinion and hope the reader will accept and agree with it. For instance, he takes facts from anthropologists and historians, quotes Karl Marx from The Communist Manifesto, and comments on Max Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.
