New York - On Saturday March 25th it had been an excruciating week for both men and women machine workers at the Triangle factory in lower Manhattan. The workers were making plans for the night and looking forward to their one day off, when suddenly flames combust from a waste basket underneath one of the workers tables. Workers hurried to get buckets of water to extinguish the fire but it had been too late. The fire had outburst consuming the air and expanded viciously to other waste bins and files. The blazing inferno cultivated and prolonged so rapidly after just half an hour the viscous fire had disintegrated the entire 9th, 10th and 11th floor . Later investigators found over a 140 corpses .…
The Triangle Fire was a horrible event which caused deaths of workers who were working at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. This factory was a sweatshop. A sweatshop was a place where people worked for long hours with low pay, and they worked in very poor conditions. People who worked here were there for the money that they needed. They were immigrants, young women, and children. They may have been doing this to support their family. Poor conditions and a few other things caused many deaths in this fire. Also there was a policy from the government called the laissez faire. This policy said that the government can't interfere with the business operations. This was favored by the business because then they could do whatever they wanted to. The business could have horrible conditions for the workers…
In the novel, Forgotten Fire, written by Adam Bagdasarian, the main culture presented to the reader is the oppressive Turkish culture. The idea of this culture being dominant can be identified through the distinctly negative behavior towards Armenians.…
“To Build a Fire” is a naturalist’s view of the harsh peril that the Yukon can hold. The characters were all in the Yukon and each had different fates due to the willingness to accept the rules of such a harsh climate. The tone and mood help set up such a naturalistic story where one should not trifle with nature. Throughout the story the main character fights himself and the elements to try to survive. “To Build a Fire” by Jack London shows how the dismissal of knowledge and experience due to self-confidence creates arrogance.…
In the short story, “How to Build A Fire,” and the short dialogue titled, “ Survival is the Ultimate Goal in World’s Toughest Sled Dog Race,” there are many differences while at the same time there are many similarities. To begin the two have many similarities. One is that they both are in the same general parts of Alaska. In the article about the dog races it says, “Crossing to Dawson City-the old Klondike gold rush town that marks the Quest’s halfway point.” This is where the short story’s, “How to Build A Fire,” setting took place. This means that the articles both take place in the same spots of Alaska in the cold winters. In the same articles (story) there are even more similarities. Another one is that, in both of the articles/stories one of the characters in…
The title of the documentary I watched is “Triangle Fire” it was made February 28, 2011 about the massive Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of 1911 that killed 146 people. The thesis of this film is mainly taking a look into the working lives of immigrants in the early 1900’s. The filmmaker’s agenda was apparent in this film and it was to expose the working conditions, and lives of these workers at the time to ensure the viewer would know the corruption that was at hand with the private industry of American factories. This film wanted to convey the message that the working conditions in factories in these times were unacceptable and they led to the biggest work related tragedy in that city to date. This film is accurate because it covers all the historical evidence that’s needed to show its viewers what the working condition were that…
The novel, A World Lit Only by Fire by William Manchester delves into the history of Europe’s dark ages through the early Renaissance. Three key figures constantly referred to within the novel include Erasmus, Martin Luther, and Ferdinand Magellan. All three men are responsible for Europe’s entrance into a modern era of reformation, knowledge, and discovery, and are widely considered to responsible for the development of the humanist philosophy. When Manchester begins weaving his historical tale of the middle ages, he details how the dark ages witnessed very few inventive ideas and was dominated by the Catholic Church and its papacy. As each of the three men are introduced and their accomplishments explained, the story takes a turn and leads towards a modernized era. Erasmus, Martin Luther, and Ferdinand Magellan all share a devotion to their religion which connects to their exploits, however, their overall contributions seem to somewhat differ.…
In the story London describes the harsh weather that he had experienced.London describes the weather as being -75 degrees, and the dangers of that weather. The man is travelling from one area of the Yukon to another camp. He is traveling alone except for a dog. London writes “The trouble with him was that he was without imagination. He was quick and alert in the things of life, but only in the things, and not the significances. Fifty degrees below zero meant eighty-odd degrees of frost. Such fact impressed him as being cold and uncomfortable, and that was all” (To Build a Fire 27). The man does not understand the danger of this setting. Jack London’s time in the Klondike also influenced the conflict in “To Build a Fire”. Which is man vs. nature. The man has to get to camp before he freezes to death. He gets his feet wet, and can not start a fire. The man lacks the instincts and experience to survive, and he eventually freezes to death. “It did not lead him to meditate upon his frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon man’s frailty in general, able only to live within certain narrow limits of heat and cold, and from there it did not lead him to the conjectural field of immorality and the man’s place in the universe” (To Build a Fire 27). The man does not even think about what can happen to him in this environment, and he does not even think he can die in this…
Stories have different settings, plots, tones, themes, and moods. These things make a story. These are the things that impact how a character would act in the story. One short story where a character was impacted is in the short story “To Build a Fire”, written by Jack London. The setting of the story was set in the Klondike of the Yukon Territory of 1896. The day was cold and dark, the trail was mysterious, strange, and weird. This causes the Man in the story to face many problems. Settings of a story can impact a character physically, mentally, and emotionally.…
Fire aids humans and helps them survive by providing important benefits. By producing heat and light, fire offers protection and the ability to prepare safe food and water. The gift from Prometheus, fire symbolizes raw power and offers proof of the human ability to shape the world. Although fire has no subconscious, it has a will of its own, and can therefore be considered human. In Lord of the Flies, Golding personifies fire as a figure of authority in order to demonstrate how power can be used to create chaos or achieve order. Fire transforms from a tool and emerges as a character with the authority to restore the boys to civility as well as the destructive capability to force the boys to regress to a savage state.…
Deepak Chopra once said, “The masculine energy was about survival. The male was the hunter who risked his life and had to be in the fight-flight mode.” When pertaining to survival, the main character in “To Build a Fire” by Jack London failed to follow three main steps in Laurence Gonzales’ nonfiction trade book, “Deep Survival.” The main character failed to stay calm, to think, analyze, and plan, and to never give up during his trek through the pure, untrampled white snow.…
The theme of Jack London’s 1908 version of “To Build a Fire” is that nature’s significance overpowers the unimportant needs of man. In the 1908 version, a half-wolf dog was added into the literary work to further the plot and significance of the story, highlighting this central theme of existence. The addition of the dog in the revision helped emphasize the theme by representing the primitivity of nature, and providing contrast. By combining these two elements, London asserts his understanding of the tragic and brutal relationship between man and nature.…
“Who you are and what you believe in is your real home, the only home no one can take from you, the only home that will last.” I believe that this is one of the themes for the book Forgotten Fire.…
What is fire culture? What does that even mean? Well, I guess to know, you have to know something about what culture is and what cumulative it deposits of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, hierarchies, religion and more. Now imagine having to live with people you do not know and having different work experience, beliefs, background, age etc. Well, that is what firefighters do. How does this work you may ask? It works because they have the same goals, the same values, and there is not really that many careers out there where you have a second family, where you know your brother or sister will not only have your back when it counts but one day may even save your life. Just like any good organization it has its challenges and these challenges have been changing the fire services since the 1950s.…
