A great philosopher once said ‘War never helps to end war’ and history is a witness to this. The past 400 years bears ample testimony to the fact that war only leads to destruction and disaster. In order to have peace it does not make sense to prepare for war. It is a contradiction.
This great land, the land of Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi, has proven to the world that ahimsa or ‘non violence is the sure way to peace. The entire world acknowledged the stubborn and adamant stance a certain diminutive man took which brought the great British empire to its knees. He retaliated to every act of violence with non-cooperation and achieved the impossible. Gandhi said ‘An eye for an eye would only make the whole world blind’ and the entire world awoke to this new mantra of the ‘half naked fakir’.
War has never achieved such a victory, for in a war there are no winners. Preparing for war serves no purpose but to incite people against one another. Piling up of armaments and ammunition instills a false sense of security in a country and they gradually lose their sense of tolerance for others. Moreover, in the course of preparing for war ego plays a major role. Every country wants to be one up against the other and piling up of nuclear warfare becomes uncontrolled. Another important point is that the political scenario, especially in developing countries could keep changing. If power suddenly falls in the hands of unstable or irrational leaders it could lead to disastrous consequences. Many countries even today have stockpiled nuclear armaments and are a virtual live bomb. A streak of insanity could jeopardize the future of an entire planet.
Peace can only come about by education and enlightenment. People need to be aware of the ill-effects of war. The youth need to be educated. In many developing countries much of its resources go into research, development and production of nuclear weapons instead of being used for feeding and educating its citizens. Lack of education makes such youth easy targets for terrorists who brainwash them to carry on a war in the name of religion.
Thus, a country that prepares for war is definitely not in a position to spread the message of non violence and peace. To the contrary, it is inviting unrest and turmoil leading ultimately to the sure annihilation of the planet.
In conclusion it can be said that a show of aggression would only serve to create more of the same and only by spreading the message of peace can peace be achieved. The dove is hardly to be found perched on a cannon.
