Harper Lee wrote a historical novel called, To Kill a Mockingbird. It takes place in Maycomb, Alabama around the 1930’s. The main characters in this novel are: Atticus, Jem, and Scout. The novels point of view is written from Scouts perspective from when she was younger, around the ages 7 to 8. Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout, and he his occupation is a lawyer. Throughout the first part of the novel most of the events have Jem and Scout along with their friend Dill trying to find out the mystery of Boo Radley. The second part of the novel revolves around Atticus and his new case. He is defending a black man, Tom Robinson, and his case affects their whole family and especially Scout and Jem’s perspective on life. To Kill a Mocking Bird teaches many lessons and informs the leader about discrimination and often uses the symbol, a mockingbird, to explain some of the characters situations. …show more content…
Even though it was obvious to the court that Tom did not commit the crime, the jury decided to have Tom guilty because of his skin color. Maycomb County being racist played a huge roll on Tom’s future and it was unfair. Jem and Scout have a nanny/cook to help Atticus due to the fact that their mother is not in the picture. When their Aunt Alexandra came she wanted Atticus to fire Calpurnia because she was black. Aunt Alexandra showed strong hatred towards black people when she proposed that and it resembled how much of the town felt about blacks. Boo Radley was discriminated against and had many rumors spread about him along with being teased. Because he had special needs people were also discriminating against him as well.
