The children found chewing gum and Indian-heads, and they decide to keep them and see if they belong to anyone at school. Scout is oblivious to who’s hiding spot it is, she just wants the loot. While Jem, being older, thinks more and has come to the conclusion that it is Boo Radley’s hiding spot. It is believed to be Boo Radley because they walk by his house almost every day and that it is the Radley’s tree, not to far for him to sneak out.

Jem and Dill want to send a note to Boo because Dill’s curiosity got the better of him. They also want to get a good look at them because all the rumors are substantial at best. The children’s opinions have changed from horror to mild curiosity, at least for Jem and Dill.

Jem and Dill trespassed on the Radley’s property so that they can catch a glimpse of Boo Radley through a loose shutter. The aftermath of their little escapade was a door greased with spit and Jem losing his pants. Jem says it was a bad idea because he lost his pants there and soon Mr. Nathan would find them, show them to Atticus, and Jem would get whipped. Atticus has never whipped Jem for as long as he remembered, and Jem would like to keep it that
