To Kill A Mockingbird Discrimination Quotes
Chapter 10: “Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit’ em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Lee, 119). What I like about this quote is, it symbolizes Jem, Scout and Boo Radley. At first, I was curious why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, but reading some of the lines, I understand that mockingbirds makes music that enjoys the people in Maycomb, and also they don’t do irritating thing such as usual birds would do, such not nesting in “corncribs”, and not eating up people’s gardens. But the way how white people, gambled it on weekdays shows that they don’t care about African American at all, and their property. Come on, gambling in a church, SERIOUSLY!!!!!! This setting is very important to the book because it shows how Jem and Scout have grown enough to realize how African American live in Maycomb in their point of view. This setting brought drama between Calpurnia and Lula, differences towards white and black churches, and how flabbergasted the children were towards Calpurnia’s “black” talk. Many things happen during this chapter, but most importantly, Scout learn how African American church was different from her. During the whole chapter she was comparing the differences between the two churches, such as they don’t have hymn books, they just sang along after the verse was spoken. She learn that many African American doesn’t know how to read, so they don’t have any hymn books. Also, they do collections that in total it suppose to $10.00 minimum or else no one leaves. This setting impacted the story because Scout a valuable lesson such as Africans American doesn’t have the chance like any other white people will have because of their color of skin and their race. This church showed her how her society is awful because no black people have the rights as many white people in Maycomb, because of what time period they are living in.
