Calpurnia is a black woman who cooks and cleans for Atticus’ family, and is always shown kindness and equality in the Finch’s home. During the 1900’s there was lots of segregation, and many people were racist, and even in Maycomb. Yet, Atticus is a wise leader by showing equality with all races, and even defends a black man in court. Even though Tom, the black man, loses the case, all the coloured people of the town show their gratitude towards Atticus for defending him, and they prepare lots of food for his family the next morning. The neighbours give and support each other in times of need, even Boo, when he gives Scout a blanket during the cold night.
