Tom Robinson foreshadows a scene where a mad dog was roaming around the neighborhood. Everyone in the neighborhood were so afraid that every house was closed and people stayed away from the streets. Atticus was informed about the mad dog by Calpurnia. A little after he arrived, he was forced to hold a gun and aim to shot the mad dog. Everyone else avoided engagement with the dog. This relates to how the white individuals responds towards Tom Robinson and other black people. They avoid engaging with people like them. In the trial, it was decided that Robinson was guilty predominantly because of the fact that he was black. He was later shot like the mad dog, who did not really pose any threat to the people.
Lastly, Harper Lee uses the literary device of irony to demonstrate a character’s opinions towards racism. For instance, Miss Gates, Scout’s teacher, addresses the class on the mischievousness of Hitler's mistreatment of the Jews and on the ideals of equity and majority rule government. Scout wonders how she educates them about equality when she saw her talking to Miss Stephanie about how someone should teach the black people a lesson. This is ironic since Miss Gates claims that inequality is a cruel in front of the children, when in reality, she believes that the black people are way beneath
