In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, she states that many of the people in Maycomb County are hypocrites during the time of discrimination. This means that many of them said they would not do something but they end up doing it even if they were very religious. This shows that the county of Maycomb is not trustworthy to what they say because someone could end up doing something they said they would not do. Also that the youth during this time period are witnessing more things than the adults which is hypocrisy. However Jem and Scout don't really understand the idea of the trail because they have different thoughts and opinions then what adults would have like they do not really know how the real world works until they mature, tell how people are by getting to know them and judging them by who they are, act. …show more content…
As the novel goes on Scout asks her father Atticus why he has decided to defend a negro and Atticus replies “because I would not be able to hold my head high in town or tell you and Jem not to do anything again”(Lee 86).
This showed hypocrisy as the trial was finished because when Atticus walked out the courthouse he had his head down while passing by all the negroes on top of the balcony. Also because he said he had failed and now Tom Robinson was sentenced death this lead Atticus to be very quiet and disappointed. This showed hypocrisy because he had told Scout that win or lose the trial he would hold his head high in town knowing he had tried his best to defend Mr.Robinson. This goes back with the thesis because Scout and Jem started to learn the feeling of failing at your job and getting someone killed due to
racism.
A person who also showed hypocrisy was Miss Gates when she choose to defend the Jews who are being persecuted by the enemies the Nazis. Scout had also overheard Miss Gates saying “it's time somebody taught em negroes a lesson, they were gettin way above themselves”(Lee 283). This showed hypocrisy because Miss Gates showed how she hates hitler and ends up defending the Jews. Also because at first she might have supported Hitler's power in Germany but then just switched out of nowhere and Scout was able to remember what she had stated before about the negroes. This restates the thesis because Scout is starting to figure out the real world of how all of these adults switch their opinions and sides depending on what they feel like doing.
In conclusion I believe that the novel
