In the novel of “ To Kill A Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, mockingbirds are used to represent the destruction of innocence. Throughout the book, a number of characters such as Jem, Tom Robinson, Dill, Boo Radley, and Mr. Raymond can be identified as mockingbirds. Innocents who have been injured or destroyed through contact with evil. Tom Robinson is being accused of raping Mayella. Which is Bob Ewells daughter. Tom was proven not guilty to the court but since he is a man of color he going to be prosecuted. Jem and Scout are also symbols of a mockingbird because they got into a brawl with Bob Ewell. Which is a black man and he gets treated less of a person because of his color. Atticus underwent a lot of hate from many because of his kind action of helping Tom. He was threatened along with his family. While in trial, Atticus was proving Tom innocent he leaned towards Mr.Ewell as guilty of raping Mayella Ewell which is his daughter. This caused Mr. Ewell to become very angered with Atticus. Which caused Mr. Ewell to follow Atticus to the Robinsons family’s house and assault Atticus. Jem was waiting in the car when they arrived to Tom Robinson's family’s house and sees a shadow approaching, as soon it was visible it was Bob Ewell. He demanded for Atticus to come out and as soon as he came out Bob looked at him straight in the eye and spit in his face. Atticus whipped it off and did not say a word, but just went around him and left right away.
