seat in the second row.
I looked behind me and saw that all the seats in the courtroom were filled. In the back of the courtroom stood some unlucky people who did not get a seat in time. The blacks sat up in the balcony, I recognized three small, white faces in the crowd up on the balcony. In the balcony, it was way hotter than it was downstairs, which was hard to believe. As the last couple people took their seats silence filled the room. This trial di than any other in Maycomb County. People from all around Maycomb were here. It seemed like everyone in town was there for it was very crowded. Sheriff Heck Tate spoke, “All rise the honorable Judge Taylor presiding”. A white-haired heavy old man trudged up to his bench and sternly said, “Everyone may be seated”. As Tom Robinson was lead to his seat in handcuffs he sat down wearily. His dark face was beaded with sweat for the heat was unbearable. Sitting next to him was Atticus Finch his attorney. I knew that Tom Robinson was innocent but I could not say anything or I would be scowled at just like Atticus. Heck Tate was the first witness to speak. We all believed his testimony about what happened. But nobody wanted
to believe that Tom was innocent. Atticus was strengthened by Tate’s story. He began speaking as if he was spitting words out. Bob Ewell the father of Mayella Ewell began rolling his eyes. Everyone in town despised Mr. Ewell. He had no job and spent his days drinking and hunting for squirrels to eat. He had eight kids to take care of but he never really did take good care of them. His children were known for going to school for the first day and then never coming back until next year. The little money he got from the government went to his alcohol obsession. After hearing both sides of the story the jury and Judge Taylor went to a room to make their decision. We had sat there waiting for hours. When the jury came back in they did not make eye contact with Tom Robinson. All I could remember was that the jury declared him guilty of rape. He was then led away by Sheriff Heck Tate. Atticus Finch began walking with him trying to talk to him saying that he would get him out of jail. Tom Robinson had no hope left and denied Atticus. Judge Taylor then said, “Court is adjourned”. Everybody began to get up and leave. Everybody but the people sitting in the balcony. I began to walk out with the rest of the crowd. Some started cheering when they walked outside. It was smoldering hot outside so I decided to walk home to tell my brother everything about the trial.
