[Analysis ]Mr.Dubose shows courage when she realized that she had a problem with her prescription. “She said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody”, suggests that she was facing the world alone and sick for a lengthy time. Not many individuals can identify and then admit they have a problem when they are sick as she was. For many, they would “take anything to make it easier”, however Mrs.Dubose decided to act on her …show more content…
problem. “She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did”, tells the reader that she didn’t let any excuses get in the way of achieving her goal and that’s courageous. She admitted her problem of being addicted to morphine, and actually act to stop her addiction. “That’s what she did”, means that she died in this world, but she also kicked away her addiction. Even though she isn’t the nicest, she sure is one of the bravest.
[Context]Each day the alarm goes off, Jem and Scout knew it is time for her medication. Each day the alarm goes off later and later. The children don’t know what Ms.Dubose was prescribed morphine. She eventually became addicted to it, After Mrs.Dubose dies, Atticus explains to jem what’s actually happening, “She said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and to nobody. Jem, when you’re sick as she was, it’s all right to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t all right for her. She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did.”Mrs.Dubose died free of being dependent on any drugs or anybody and that’s exactly what she wanted. Despite Jem’s hate towards her, he was the hero that helped her from her addiction.
Ch.13-14:[Quote]:“....they do get on a lot better without me.
I can't help them any. They ain't mean. They buy me everything I want, but it's now-you've-got-it-go-play-with-it. "(Lee 191)
[Analysis] “....They do get on a lot better without me”, suggest that Dill feels neglected because his parents don’t care about his being. “I can’t help them any”, suggest that since he’s not a use to his parents anymore, he’s no longer needed. Dill’s family is not connected to say the least. He is sad because his parents ship him off each summer because they don’t care about him being in Meridian. However, Dill suck it up and move away from his “parents”, that shows courage because it’s hard running away from your parents and never seeing them again.
[Context]Scout’s best friend is Dill who lives in Meridian and comes to visit his aunt during the summers. Dill ran away from his parents because he doesn’t feel wanted. He was later discovered under Scout’s bed. Dill tells Scout why he’s running away from home. Dill express his solitude caused from his parents saying,“....they do get on a lot better without me. I can't help them any. They ain't mean. They buy me everything I want, but it's now-you've-got-it-go-play-with-it.

Ch.15-16[Quote]:“You can turn around and go home again, Walter,” Atticus said pleasantly. “Heck Tate’s around somewhere.”(Lee 202)
[Analysis]Real courage doesn’t waver-“You can turn around and go home again, Walter”, said Atticus. The quote shows that Atticus's bravery in standing in the way of a lynch mob to protect Tom Robinson. He bravely stands in the way of the mob because he knows if the steps aside an innocent man would die at the hands of the mob. Atticus however not only shows courage, but also tries to teach his children about what true courage is .Atticus stands by his choice, he does what’s right, even if it is not the most popular choice. Atticus wants no part of which his town is going down in history contributing to prejudice .“Heck Tate’s around somewhere”, tells how he’s trying to scare the mob of the sheriffs nearby.
[Context]Sheriff Tate may not be in the town on that night, Atticus suspected trouble. He sat in front of the jail when the mob came. “You can turn around and go home again, Walter,” Atticus said pleasantly. “Heck Tate’s around somewhere.”Suddenly, Scout and Jem appeared; the men ordered Atticus and his kids to leave. Nobody changed their positions; later on, the children’s conversation led to the mob to being dispersed.
Ch.17-18[Quote]“My paw's never touched a hair o'my head in my life,' she declared firmly. 'He never touched me.”(Lee 246)
[Analysis] “My paw’s never touched a hair o’my head in my life”, suggest Mayella is claiming that her father didn’t abuse her. However, that doesn’t turn out to be the case in the later chapters. It was her father who beat her in the first place which resulted in the whole court case. The part, “He never touched me.” tells that Mayella is so afraid of her father that if she tells the truth she would get beaten up.She lies to protect him, as she is scared of what he might do to her if she does not. She has always lived by her fathers rules and always abides by them. She doesn’t respect him, yet she still feels that she must protect him. She shows cowardice because of her inability to tell the truth about what truly happened.
[Context]When Atticus asked Mayella if her father has done anything abusive, she lies saying,“My paw's never touched a hair o'my head in my life,' she declared firmly. 'He never touched me.”She knows she’s lying. She is covering for her father and claims that he has never beaten her. She would rather see Tom Robinson, an innocent man, being accused rather than her father. The Ewell has no truth in them and their social standing shows that also.
Ch.19-20[Quote]“She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man. Not an old Uncle, but a strong young Negro man. No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards”(Lee 272)
[Analysis] “What did she do?She tempted a Negro”, tells how racism was apart of society back then. Racism affected the people of Maycomb negatively, a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins. “..she kissed a black man”, means , she violated an act of segregated Southern society. “No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards’, suggest that when she realised she was blaming an innocent man, she knew what she has done, however, was too scared to admit she lied. This is an example of a cowardice because Mayella still fails to tell the truth of what actually happened between her Tom Robinson, and her father.
[Context]Atticus said that Mayella was guilty of breaking the code saying,”...She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable… but it came crashing down on her afterwards”. Mayella knew she was guilty of breaking it. He goes on to say if she wanted to avoid the consequences, she has to admit what she has done. However, she blames Tom Robinson by accusing him of rape.
