To kill a mockingbird is relevant because of the debate we're having today if it wasn’t relevant we wouldn't be talking about it. The irrelevant side are just people with two reasons “we wanna protect our kids from language.” or “racism has been abolished long ago.” but we all know it hasn’t and it still has a ton of stuff to tell you if we're willing to listen.
"In America we don't believe in persecuting anybody. Persecution
comes from people who are prejudiced.” However prejudiced still sticks around to day, lingers in people's mind. Before racism people got along just fine then someone thought of slaves and human value lost value depending on skin color. We need to read about this time before someone suggests the same thing
To Kill a Mockingbird teaches us why minorities are afraid of the criminal justice system. “it explains to readers who don't understand it why black people are afraid of the criminal justice system, because we have not gotten, historically, justice in that system.” (Here and Now) There's still questions about justice today. “African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites.” (NAACP) Theses issues are still relevant today.
Some people claim that the language in To Kill a Mockingbird is too intense and the book should be banned. “The book's racial slurs, profanity, and frank discussion of rape have led people to challenge its appropriateness in libraries and classrooms across the United States.” (Wikipedia) People are just being overprotective. Students need to learn this stuff so that we don’t make the same mistakes we did 40 years ago.
Seems like To Kill a Mockingbird gets to live another millennium due to our choices. We can never fully get rid of prejudice just slow it down. The world should keep studying To Kill a Mockingbird even if it has harsh language They could learn a thing or two from it. And yet generations from now we could be prejudice free if we are willing to work towards those goals. Thus becoming better as a whole.
