To Kill A Mockingbird Road Map Analysis
The “road map” guides the reader through the story and gives the reader knowledge of the events happening. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jean-Louise Finch is the narrator of the story. The entire story is told through her eyes, thoughts, and imagination. Jean is a six year old girl, living in Maycomb County of Alabama in the 1930’s. She lives with her father, Atticus Finch, her brother Jem Finch, and her cook Calpurnia. You are able to see that Jean is the narrator because everything is told through her perspective. She builds a “road map” through the story because she tells what’s going to happen. Since this story took place in the 1930’s, the story took place during the Great Depression. This meant that during this time, almost everyone was living with little to no money, and this was a major problem especially in Alabama. The “road map” for this part of the story was telling how her family and the people of Maycomb County dealt with the stock market crash. Jem explained the stock market crash to Jean. “Not exactly. The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them hardest.” This showed how the people of Maycomb dealt with the crash. Also, the teaching in the United States back in those times was very horrible. Jean was a very intelligent girl for her age and instead of her teacher acknowledging that and moving her up a grade level like we would today, she had to stay back and learn how to read, which she already knew how to do. This book is about Scout Finch and her life in the 1930’s in Maycomb County, Alabama. Harpe, shows how Scout matures and progresses in this book along with many other things.
