Final Thoughts Essay
To Kill a Mockingbird had very complex characters. Both the novel and the movie version showed these characters differently and similarly.
Tom’s character is portrayed in similar and different ways through both the novel and movie. Both portrayals were similar in showing Toms role in the storyline. Tom was a representation of the mockingbird and its innocence. Also, the plot Tom follows in the story doesn’t change between the novel and the movie. There are fewer differences between Tom in the novel and movie. The main difference is how we see Tom. I think that the movie showed Tom better because we see emotions more in the trial. When I was reading the book it was hard to imagine how Tom felt the stressful situations. Based on this I think that the movie presented a stronger portrayal of Tom. Miss Maudie Atkinson’s character is showed in similar and different ways through the novel and movie also. The difference between Maudie the book and movie is mostly the things that were cut out. For example, her house never burned down and the kids don’t go over to her house as much as in the book. I found fewer similarities because the movie didn’t show Miss Maudie a lot. But she is still the Finches neighbor, a widow, but still a very optimistic person. Because of the very few similarities of Maudie I believe that the book showed her character better.

Racism was shown in the story many times. For example most of Tom Robinson’s trial was biased by racism. Tom was black so he nearly automatically was sentenced as guilty, because he was a black man
