To Kill a Mockingbird
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” (116)
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view — until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” --Atticus (pg. 30)
“You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anyone says to you, don’t let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change…it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning.”--Atticus (pg. 76)
It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived. ~Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird, Chapter 11
I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks. ~Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird, Chapter 23, spoken by the character Scout
"As you grow older you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it— whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, of how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash.” (Atticus page. 200, chapter 18)
“It’s not okay to hate anybody.”—(Atticus page. 246, chapter 24)
"'It's against the law all right,' said my father, 'and it's certainly bad when a man spends his relief checks on green whisky while his children have a way of crying from hunger pains. I don't know of landowner around here who begrudges those children any game their father can hit.''Of course he shouldn't, but he'll never change his ways. Are you going to take out your disapproval on his children'" (p 34) 1) “Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.”(Scout) page 18 2) Before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." What this quote means is that you have to look at and understand things from the way that other people do. This quote tells us that Atticus is a good father figure as he is trying to instill good moral values into his children; he is endorsing the value of equality. This lesson of equality is important because Maycomb is a town that is full of social prejudices, specifically social prejudice towards the black community.…

Atticus was a well-educated, respected lawyer in the town of Maycomb. Atticus put his family relationship on the line for justice. Even though the people in the town were criticizing him. “He had announced the day before that Scout Finch’s daddy defended niggers” (page 85). She said everyone was using that word. Atticus told her that the use of that work was for common people, and everyone minus one was going to be using it. He had the courage to send his daughter back to school where he knew everyone else was using the word and she would be criticized by her peers but he stood for equality even at his daughters expense. Scout asked if you should not be defending him why are you doing it.…

In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus once stated “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around it.” In this essay, I’m going to discuss life lessons that can be learned from this novel and are still relatable today. The three life lessons that come to mind are racism, injustice, and don’t judge others based on their appearance.…

"My face set to a grim and determined expression. I speak in all modesty as I say this, but I discovered at that moment that I have a fierce will to live. It's not something evident, in my experience. Some of us give up on life with only a resigned sigh. Others fight a little, then lose hope. Still others--and I am one of those--never give up. We fight and fight and fight. We fight no matter the cost of battle, the losses we take the improbability of success. We fight to the very end. It's not a question of courage. It's something constitutional, an inability to let go."…

Atticus does, however, prove to be a very good father. Whenever someone talks badly about her father, Scout will stand up to them and sometimes even do it violently. Everyone in the town, it seems, makes fun of Atticus because of the black American he is defending. They feel that he is a disgrace to his family and to the rest of the town. However, Atticus never lets that get to him, and he doesn’t want it to get to Scout either. When Scout asks her father about all of the bad things people are saying about him and the trial, he says “You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change… it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning.” (101)…

One person’s actions can change the world. This can be seen in To Kill a Mockingbird. In this story, Scout Finch tells the story of when her father, Atticus Finch, takes on the task of defending Tom Robinson, a black man, in a rape case. This proved to be a highly controversial ordeal that shakes up their old, little town of Maycomb County, Alabama. Racial prejudice runs high in Maycomb during the Great Depression, the time in which this story takes place. In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch has a significant influence on Maycomb County and the residents living inside of it.…

In the novel courage is presented as knowing when to back down and use knowledge to solve your issues rather than physical fighting. Harper Lee used Atticus Finch many times throughout the novel to present this in his use of composure when confronted by others. This theme is presented by Atticus when he is telling his children to use their minds not their fists to stand up for their values. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anyone says to you, don’t let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change…it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning.” Colloquial language is used in this quote through the words “don’t let ‘em get your goat.” Meaning not letting others make you angry or effect your emotions in a negative way. The idea of displaying courage backed up in a certain passage by using colloquial language and metaphor through Scout Finch. “I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said then dropped my fists and walked away, ‘Scout’s a coward!’ ringing in my ears. It was the first time I ever walked away from a fight.” (Page 83) This quote on page 83 uses colloquial language through the words “I drew a bead on him….then dropped my…

In comparison, one of the Main Characters in “To Kill a Mockingbird” felt differently. Atticus Finch (Father of 2 and a well-known town lawyer) treated everyone with respect and dignity. No matter the color of their skin or where they came from. For example, Calpurnia (Atticus’s Housemaid and nanny for the kids) during that time segregation and racism was a big thing. Although Calpurnia was African-American, Atticus still treated her with respect. He allowed his children to attend church with her and allowed her to treat his children as if they were her own. He never downed Calpurnia in front of the kids or at all for that matter. He made sure he taught his kids no matter the color of your skin, everyone is human before they are any other race. As long as someone respects you respect them, and even when they don’t you still show respect. You…
