Analysis Essay The title of the novel and the symbolism of the mockingbird connect with the story told because killing a mockingbird is represented and shows who in the story is a mockingbird. For example, the author, Harper Lee writes "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee 94) This quote shows that mockingbirds are harmless and don't do anything to bother anyone. Ms. Maudie says that mockingbirds are harmless creatures and you can shoot blue-jays and rabbits but it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. In addition, when Atticus discusses the case with his brother he says "The only thing we've got is a black man's word. The jury couldn't possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson's word against the Ewells" (Lee 88). This quote shows that in To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are considered mockingbirds because they are innocent people being accused by society. Tom Robinson, is one of the mockingbirds in the story, he's a black man being accused of raping Mayella Ewell.
For example, after Tom Robinson's death, Mr. Underwood's editorial "likened Tom's death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children" (Lee 241). This quote shows that Mr. Underwood understood what happened to Tom was wrong. Everyone knew that Tom was innocent, but said he was guilty do to his skin color.

    Prejudice in To Kill a Mockingbird

    Simply due to the colour of Tom Robinson’s skin he is wrongly convicted of rape. There is strong evidence that supports the innocence of Tom yet is ignored due to the prejudice towards coloured people. This evidence includes the placement and type of injuries, capability of individual, and the lack of concern for Mayella Ewell’s injuries. If the jury looked past the colour of the suspect they would easily see that Tom was not guilty and Bob Ewell was the true culprit for this horrendous act. Jem Finch was one of the few who would not persecute but he examined the evidence brought forth and then made his decision. This was displayed when Jem was certain that Atticus was going to win the case when Reverend Sykes spoke up and said, “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr.Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man” (279). This quote gives the reader an insight into the automatic conviction of coloured people despite evidence provided in Maycomb County. This reinforces that the colour of the suspect’s skin determines the verdict in defiance of if the suspect is truly liable. This is accurately portrayed when Atticus is giving his final plea to the jury and says, “This case is as simple as black and white” (271). In this one line Atticus is able to summarize the whole trial. The jury had a choice, whether to believe a white man with little to no evidence or a black man that has strong evidence to support his innocence.
