To Kill a Mockingbird
Literacy Analysis Essay

In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee tells the reader about the people living in Maycomb County. Throughout the three years we follow these characters; we see how they interact with each other and learn how love and hate are complex emotions. This essay will examine love for family, romantic love, and love for community in order to show how complicated the emotions of love and hate can be.
Jem and Scout are growing up in a loving family. Calpurnia is the mother figure to the children. She makes sure both kids are fed and ready for school. She scolds them and watches after them. She takes them to Church and shares the values she has been taught. Atticus is a loving father to Jem and Scout. He always makes time for them. He shares stories with them and helps them to understand the world around them. By helping others in the community and sharing his feelings about understanding others with his children, Atticus is a good role model for Jem and Scout. As siblings, Jem and Scout clearly share a love for each other. They play together, tell each other their secrets and look out for each other.
Unfortunately, not all children in Maycomb grow up loved or taught how to love. Mr. Ewell is a mean drunk who does not pay any attention to his family. He does not even make sure that they are fed. He hates people in general and Black people most of all. When he sees his daughter trying to kiss Tom Robinson, he is blinded by hatred and accuses this innocent man of raping her. He is teaching his daughter to hate. As a result, she did not tell the truth in court. Nathan Radley did not show his family love either. Boo has spent his entire life as a prisoner of his own home because his father was overzealous in punishing him for a childhood mistake. He also covers the knot hole with tar when he discovers that Boo has been making contact and developing a friendship with Jem and Scout. However,

    Atticus shows that his words are not empty, and he practices what he has taught his children. Atticus conveys empathy for the minorities around him, such as the Ewell family and the Negroes. Tom Robinson, a black man, is being represented in court by Atticus. Atticus empathizes for Tom who is wrongly accused of taking advantage of Mayella Ewell, a poor white women, and tries his hardest to win the case for Tom. After losing the trial and humiliating the Ewells in the process, Bob Ewell, Mayella’s father, spits in Atticus’ face and threatens to get even with him. Atticus, feeling sorry for Mayella, takes this incident and uses it as a lesson of empathy for his children. Atticus says, “ Jem see if you can stand in Bob Ewell’s shoes a minute. I destroyed every thread of credibility at that trial, if he he had any to begin with. The man had to have some kind of comeback, his kind always do. So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that’s something I’ll gladly take. He had to take it out on somebody and I’d rather it be me than that houseful of children out there” (292-293).     I believe in judging someone by their actions and character rather than by the color of their skin and sexuality. This I believe because there is good and bad in all of us. The color of our skin does not depict the flaws we have. In the second amendment it states that all men are created equal, but we still do not treat each other equally. Defending Tom Robinson was not easy because I knew that from the minute Mayella opened her mouth Tom was a dead man. But everyone including a black man deserves a second chance.     Even the young children of Maycomb portray signs of hating on ‘negroes’ and judges Scout and Jem. For example, Cecil Jacobs, one of the boys from school, shouts to Scout, “‘my folks said your daddy was a disgrace an’ that nigger oughta hang from the water-tank!”’(Lee.09.82) which enrages Scout to start a fight. Cecil Jacobs is simply repeating exactly what his parents said about Atticus. This shows that what parents do, has a great influence on what their children think in Maycomb Also, the fact that even young children possess this racial trait is horrific and indeed proves that the town of Maycomb has a completely prejudiced mindset.     Miss Maudie explains to Scout, the protagonist of this novel who narrates as a retrospect of her life, that mockingbirds are creatures that do not harm people “but sing their hearts out” therefore they come to represent innocents destroyed by evil. This is why “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”. The mockingbird is an important symbol as it helped to highlight the ideas of prejudice and innocence. Throughout the novel, many characters can be identified as mockingbirds, the main ones seen thorough the parallel stories of Boo Radley and Tom Robinson who are both seen as mockingbirds as they are innocent and are the victims of other people’s prejudices. Boo Radley is a recluse and is seen by Maycomb as a “scary, ghostly malevolent phantom” and consequently gains the nickname ‘Boo’ Radley, his real name being Arthur. He is a mockingbird as he has harmed no one; instead he left presents for Jem and Scout to find and eventually saves them from Bob Ewell. Boo has been ruined because of his parent’s narrow-minded bigotry and has been prisoner in his own home for 20 years because of his careless behaviour in his teens.     This good nature displayed by Atticus is juxtaposed to Mr Ewell. Mr Ewell and the Ewell family was the “"the disgrace of Maycomb for three generations". Lee efficiently uses the antagonist in the novel, a man who “spends his relief checks on green whiskey his children have a way of crying from hunger pains”, as the most predominate source of evil in the novel. His mean, raciest, unforgiving, ignorant, sexist ways seemed to directly contrast Atticus’s moral judgement. Lee expertly indicates that for there to be good there must be bad. For Atticus to defend Tom Robinson and start a snowball effect which lead there to be more people standing up for the rights of black people, there must be an evil entity like Mr Ewell, two completely different entities which though are oppose tu each other but cannot live without each other. Many parallels can be drawn between Mr Ewell and Atticus and the philosophy of the yin yang.
