To Lead
What does it mean to be a leader? “To command is to serve, nothing more and nothing less” —Andre Malraux. To me this is the true meaning of being a leader, someone who takes every thought, concern, hope, and anguish of those beneath him and acts appropriately. A leader means to be someone who lives not for them self but for others and whole heartedly enjoys every single moment of it. To lead is like riding towards the beating war drums of an approaching army. All will hear it: some will flee like cowards after every thump, some will pretend like the beats were never uttered, but others will answer the call valiantly with a quickness in their steps and a sense of pride like no other; knowing that they themselves have chosen this path. What does it mean to be a leader? Well, simply it means one who’ll stand up and fight for others. This doesn’t mean as a leader you’re the caped crusader or some kind of masked vigilante. It means you’re the person who everyone looks to because they know you’ll say what is true and right in their own hearts. It means you’re the one who’ll guide and motivate them when every ounce of hope from their mortal body has been drained away and all they have left to function on is your guidance. Maybe now we lack this opportunity to show courage and leadership amongst the many fires and clashes of war but the same concepts of leadership can be applied to our more modern times. One can still “battle” the ideas that are contrary to the personal beliefs of your organization, repulse an attack upon the members of your organization by protecting and promoting them, and deal with different challenges presented in every day life by problem solving and motivating. Thus is the “war” waged every day by a leader--- the constant struggle to not only get the job done but also provide purpose, motivation, and direction to those beneath him.

A dictionary definition of a leader is a guiding hand in a movement or group. My definition of a leader is someone who stands out amongst the rest and steps up to the task and helps the “followers” advance and strive to become a leader as well. The only way a leader can be effective is by leading by example. A prime example of this is Malala Yousafzai. She was shot in the face for trying to go to school. If she hadn’t gone to school she wouldn’t have been shot, but she also wouldn’t have a Nobel Peace prize. She is now using her story to speak for access to education for everyone. A leader is someone who leads by example and uses their skills to help others succeed.…

“The very essence of leadership is its purpose. And the purpose of leadership is to accomplish a task. That is what leadership does-and what it does is more important than what it is or how it works.” This quote by Colonel Dandridge M. Malone, shows that leadership needs to be focused on what it accomplishes instead of just being leadership for leadership’s sake. To me, a leader is simply someone who has a mind of their own; someone who sets their own path instead of following another’s.…

Some look at leadership as the ability to lead. I agree 100% with leadership being the ability to lead, but in order to have the ability to lead you have to have more. There has to be a process of social leadership in which a person is able to aid and support others in their accomplishment when it comes to a specific task; this is a process of social influence on someone. Paying attention to how leaders carry themselves and interact with others socially giving guidance and being helpful. Leadership is also organizing a group or team of people to achieve a common goal and sometimes the leader may not have formal authority, but they are leading/guiding the group or team in accomplishing the goal.…

To me, leadership is leading by example. My years in high school have shown me that the person who builds people up, and shows kindness is more of a leader than someone who commands and controls people. A leader is a person who represents the whole class and motivate them. I did not believe I was a leader. During my freshman and sophomore year of high school, I was a quiet spoken individual who listens to what others have to say. It was not that I did not have anything to say, but it was the fear of saying something wrong and others disregarding what I had to say. I did several presentations in high school that made speaking in front of people more easier. However, I was still the timid person who wanted desperately to break my shell but did not know how. A shocking moment had occurred when I had became secretary of Zonta Club. It was junior year and I was surprised to have been part of the leadership team. I was able to discuss my ideas and to speak with the members at ease. It was my breaking point. I was given a privilege to be part of something that made a change. I was not just the soft spoken person, but I was a leader…
