To what extent do you hold Kingshaw responsible for what happens to him?
Charles Kingshaw is the perfect victim for Hooper, he has low self-esteem, many fears, is really sensitive and has an unhappy family backround.Hooper constantly bullies Kingshaw which leads him to commit suicide at only 11 years of age. I would say, it is not Kingshaws fault, as he is only a kid who does not know how to fight back his bully and has not got a close relationship to his mother. I would mostly blame Hooper and Mrs.Kingshaw for what happens to him.
Kingshaw has an uncomfortable relationship with his mother.He can not tell her, and she makes no effort to understand, his feelings and fears. Mrs.Kingshaw Is completely unaware of what is happening to his child, she tries to be a good mother and asks Kingshaw how he feels now and then, but fails as she accepts everything is okay when Kingshaw says so. It is almost like she is blind. How can she not see what her child is going through? If his mother would at least help him, and would stop worrying about how to impress Mr. Hooper , Kingshaw would have support from someone and would surely deal better with it.
Moreover, not only he has a hard situation at home, he has Hooper to torture him.Hooper does whatever he can to have power over Kingshaw, he enjoys it.He shows no scruples when he bullies Kingshaw, he likes feeling superior to him, and
Kingshaw does nothing about this. Even when Kingshaw has the opportunity of overcoming Hooper, he does not take it. He chooses to believe that things will change if he is nice to Hooper and that maybe someday they will become friends.
Even if he helps Hooper in some occasions, Hooper does not change his attitude towards Kingshaw and is always evil to him. He is constantly referring to his fears to be able to take control and scare Kingshaw.
I donʼt blame Kingshaw for not taking control over Hooper whenever he could. After all that he has done to him, it is normal that he is scared of what Hooper could to him in order of having revenge. Also, he would have no one to support him at home, or at any other place.
