Introduction This is a case study about an older woman (Gladys) with dementia but has mental capacity. She receives care and assistance in her home, she has a cleaner who comes in to clean once a week, a neighbour who makes her dinner (Gladys pays for it) and a granddaughter who is her advocate. She has mobility difficulties but can walk short distances with a trolley/Zimmer frame. 1.2 The Law places certain responsibilities on both the employer and the employee to make sure the environment in which the carer is working, that it is safe to carry out the activities required, to keep not just the service user safe but also the carer. We take annual training such as Manual Handling, Safe guarding, First aid, Food Hygiene and more to maintain the safety of the service user and ourselves. This is both the employer’s responsibility and the carer to make sure these are up to date under the Health and Safety Work Act 1974. An individual assessment would be done where necessary to carry out any transfers with equipment. On some occasions an occupational therapist maybe present at the first instance to help provide support to the carer and service user as best how to do any transfers.
