Today Show History
On January 14, 1952, at 7 a.m est, Americans awoke to the evolutionary and first ever NBC-TV "Today Show".

The show, an American morning news and talk show, put us in touch with the world in which we live. From news to music, the show included national news headlines, weather, in-depth interviews with news makers, lifestyle features, other light news, local news, music of the day, and what was happening tomorrow in arts, science and sports to all fields of human endeavor.

The Today Show opened with a view of Dave Garroway, one of the early hosts, looking outside through the 'Window on the World' in New York City.

Arguably, the most popular and well-known morning news and talk show for decades, the Show's formula birthed a generation of several other shows of a similar type, including ABC's Good Morning America, and CBS'

When the Today Show started, it was seen live in the Eastern and Central time zones, broadcasting three hours per morning but seen for only two hours in each time zone. Later, Today aired live for five hours a morning, but it was seen for only two consecutive hours in each of the four U.S. continental time zones. Since 1958, Today is tape-delayed for the different time zones. For many years it was a two-hour program from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. in all time zones, until NBC expanded it to three hours (until 10:00 a.m. in all time zones) on October 2, 2000. In some viewing areas, the third hour of Today is tape-delayed by an hour and airs at 10 a.m.

Other hosts over the years have been John Chancellor, Hugh Downs, Barbara Walters, Frank McGee, Jim Hartz, Tom Brokaw, Jane Pauley, Chris Wallace, Bryant Gumbel, Linda Ellerbee, and Deborah Norville.

The Today Show, broadcast from Studio 1A in 10 Rockefeller Center, NYC, is currently hosted and introduced by Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, with Al Roker doing national weather updates. Today added a fourth hour of programming on September 10, 2007, with Hoda Kotb and Kathi-Lee as

Bob Edwards’ Edward Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism is a short biography about the man that established and revolutionized broadcast journalism. Bob Edwards has ample experience in broadcast journalism as a radio news and talk show host for over 30 years (Biography.com). It is no surprise that Edwards takes a particular interest in writing about Edward Murrow since he certainly influenced Edwards’ career in radio news. While he conducted most of his research through secondary sources, he relied heavily on books by close co-workers of Murrow. With that said, Edward Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism is a great streamlined tale of Murrow’s journey from a logger, to an education advocate, to broadcast journalism.…

Daytime talk shows are certainly controversial there are those who find some of these types of show informational and helpful. There are others who view these shows as pointless and inappropriate. Daily viewers turn on there television and are bombarded with images of sex, drugs, and violence on some of the talk shows. The essay "Talk TV: Tunings into Trouble," written by Jeanne Albronda Heaton and Nana Leigh Wilson is about TV talk shows that are influencing many people. In their essay "Talk TV: Tuning into Trouble," they describe how the old TV talk shows provided useful information but, now modern talk shows have crude and vulgar topics. Heaton and Wilson's main thesis is stated at the end of article where they state "Talk TV initially had great potential as vehicle for disseminating accurate information and as a forum for public debate, although it would be hard to know it from what currently remains. Because most of these talk shows have come to rely on sensational entertainment as the mean of increasing rating, their potential has been lost." Heaton and Wilson argue…

The program itself covers a variety of topics including local and world news, interviews, public interest stories, as well as pop culture news. Many news programs seem to have lost the interest of viewers as many find the provided content boring or irrelevant to their lives as earlier stated. Good Morning America has figured out a way to combat this issue and draw in audiences by only offering news updates at the top and bottom of the hour. The remaining in-between time is filled with public interest stories, and interviews that the public finds interesting and relevant. “According to an article published in The Hollywood Reporter, as of 2012 Good Morning America has been the most watched morning news show” (O’Connel, 2015). But the question we must ask is if the news is a construction of stories rather than reality, how informed are the viewers who watch GMA and claim they are informed because they watch the…

During World War II, all of the progress that NBC was making towards developing a professional news show stopped by command of the Federal Communications Commission. Once the war ended, NBC started right back where they had left off and premiered the "NBC Tele-Newsreel" on August 5, 1945. Newsreels from theatrical companies solely supported this show. Although NBC was not pleased that they had to be reliant upon a company for their information because it was costly and hard to receive promptly, they had to deal with the setback until they could find a way to become self-reliant. In 1948, they experimented with a show called "NBC Newsroom" that had three men reading the news. It was similar to radio, but it lost the public's interest because the room "was very dull-looking and not what the public thought a newsroom should look like" (Karnick, 87).…

Our country has emerged from what seemed a small rebellious idea, to a glorious nation that stands as an idol with an envied concept of freedom and even lifestyles. It stands as one of the top five nations in the whole world, and what a wonderful homeland it is. But, the fight to achieve that status was extremely perplexing and was not given, but instead fought for. One of the many challenges was the “great depression” of the 1930’s that brought Americans to their knees. This harsh event swept over the nation with such a devastating and dark cloud that struck great fear and hopelessness into millions of citizen’s hearts, an event that will be remembered for many generations. The exact cause that began the entirety of the event is still argued even today, but it’s easy to see traces of many events leading and contributing to the great downfall. Among many of the events are: Farm failures, bank failures, stock market crash, poor government interaction, and far too many lower-class people.…
