Tom and Willie(From Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian)'s diary entries.
In Toms point of view.

Dear Rachel,

It's been over six months since Willie first came to live with me. I can't believe that he was the same thin and sickly-looking boy that I was obliged to take in for the war effort. Yes, he was a very sickly child and couldn't take the slightest bit of nutritious food. But the truth is, I quite enjoy having someone else around other then Sammy and watching him change into a boy that is full of self-confidence, healthy and most importantly, happy. It's been great seeing him mix with the other children here and of course Zach too. The first day he came back from school, knowing that he was upset because he wasn't in the same class as his friends, teaching him to write his name and telling him stories from the bible are some of the great memories I share with him. Just recently, I realised that is not just Willie that has been changing because I think I have too. When I found out that Willie liked to paint, I had gone into the crafts store to get him some paints and paper for his birthday present, it was the crafts store I had avoided for over 40 years because the memories of you are just too strong. That just shows how much Willie means to me. After all this, a letter came, it was from his mother saying that she's been ill and she wants him back for a while. I really don't understand, the boys mother hasn't written for 6 months, not mentioning that she didn't send anything for her own son's birthday. I'm really worried now, I know I can't hesitate now, after all the kid has his own mother and I have to follow his mother's wishes.

Dear diary,

I cannot believe how good Little Wierwold is. Everyone is really friendly especially Mr. Tom. For the first time I have gotten on with people my own age and I feel really good. I can read and write now and I can easily keep up with all the other people in my class. Mr. Tom is so nice to me. He got me paints for my birthday! My first set of paints! Today Mr Tom

Children are so fresh and should be the happiest of us all. It absolutely breaks my heart to see someone so worn and torn at such a young age, whether it be a fictional character in the realm of Law& Order or a child I’ve had personal experience with. Over the summer I got matched with a little buddy. Her mom is a single parent, works, and is putting herself through school with two children in elementary school. My buddy would hardly talk to me at first even though her mom said she has never been shy in her life; you could tell she didn’t understand how I really fit in the picture. But now, just a couple months later, she has completely come out of her shell and even skipped her way to my car the other day just to go hang out at my house. This is why I want to be a social worker. I want to use my education and opportunities to help these children and their families through the rough patches, and be a support for them. If no one else will pay attention to them, I will. If no one else is going to tell them how spectacular they are, I will. If no one else is going to help them realize their full potential, I…

Me and Johnny have been hiding from the police for a couple of days now. I'm sure Darry, Soda, and the rest of the gang are worried sick about us. I haven't gotten much sleep since we went into hiding, I am betting Johnny hasn't either because it is hard to get good sleep while your laying on the cold floor of an abandoned church and when you are thinking about everything that went on with our lives the past couple days. Earlier today Johnny went to the store to get some food and supplies with the $50 dollars Dally gave us to live off of while we are hiding. Besides getting food, Johnny got me a copy of Gone With The Wind because he knew I love that book so much and he wanted me to read it to him. He also got some cards…

Today I started reading Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I really like how the author describes the background of the story in the prologue of the book. It really helps to understand the story better later on. Jacob, the main character in this book, is kind of a shy kid, and seems like a slacker. He doesn’t seem to want to work hard at anything. I really love how the author jumps right into the plot with Grandpa Portman’s frantic phone call while Jacob is at work. Very excited to read more!…

The short story, “The Things They Carried”, by Tim O’brien, was my favorite reading of this week. The author states what the company is carrying, as well as emotional burdens that they carry. I think that theme of this story can be summarized as “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. As I stated in the discussion, I think this story makes a profound point about trauma and emotional stress. Physical burdens are easily observable. For example, when people see someone in a wheelchair their thoughts are most likely automatically sympathetic. However, when people see someone having a panic attack they might just assume that the person is overreacting. Nobody knows what emotional burdens someone holds. Therefore, it is wrong to judge people on appearance alone and assume that one knows the full story.…

I am sitting by the fireplace and just thinking about life in general when memories from elementary school come flooding back. I am writing this letter to you, because I feel very guilty when thoughts of your son cross my mind. To this day I wish I knew better and stood up for your son when I needed to, because I could have saved an innocent life. Not trying to make excuses, but when I was in elementary school I knew nothing better, except the fact that, you go with the flow or else you become an outcast. I could still clearly remember the first day Matthew started going to my elementary school, and just because he looked different all of us decided he did not belong. He would come to the kids and ask them in such a nice and polite way if they wanted to play with him, and in response kids would say something nasty, no elementary kid should ever say. I remember boys throwing rocks at him during recess, and a bunch of girls standing by and laughing. Yes, I also did stand by and watched, but I never encouraged the boys on or laughed, because I was thought better by my parents. My parents tell me all the time no matter how the person you come in contact with acts, you show your best side to them, because at the end of the day were all the same and no one person is better than another. One day in particular, I remember Matthew needed to go to the bathroom during recess, and the immature boys decided to take advantage of this situation. They ran to the bathroom, and blocked him from going in. He begged so much, I can still hear his voice so clearly in my head to let him go. Not being able to hold it in any longer he did it his pants, and the situation became even worse. There…

I sent the children to live with my sister a little while ago. I did what I thought was the best choice for their health. Howard was getting sick and I was worried. The oil and electric had been shut off and I needed to do what was best for them all. Jim, however, would not hear of it! He was so angry with me when he got home and saw the kids gone. I felt awful when I discovered what he had promised them, but I had to do something! I did what I had to do in order to keep them healthy and safe. He swallowed whatever pride he had and asked his old boxing buddies for change to help pay off the bills and bring the children back to us. He is so good with them. The kids love him so dearly. We all do. I know that everything is in complete…

As a family, we welcomed Lucas without hesitation. Although we had hardly any space left in our home, we did not want to separate the three siblings, let alone allow for another child to be placed into the uncertain and often unsafe foster care system. We therefore adopted this baby when he was only two days old, and I received a fourth brother. Our family has since developed an even stronger passion for the institution of adoption. It is harrowing to see how many children today are unfamiliar with true, familial love because they were raised in a broken foster care system with minimal security. These three new siblings have taught me a plethora of lessons about being grateful for mere existence and family. They took the most basic elements of our lives and thoroughly redefined their importance. Prior to this expansion, I believed adopting was merely admirable. However, this experience has inspired me to reach out and show love to the unloved. I quickly learned that adoption is incredibly important and beautiful, no matter how much space it may take…

It has been three years, six months, and twelve days since April ninth, 2013. That Tuesday, my life was changed, but not for the better. 1,291 days ago I found out that my parents lied to me, they have lied to me my whole life and I didn’t comprehend it until three and a half years ago. Throughout those years they said that they were going to get us back. Two years ago my mom had Rocco, my youngest brother, him and Brody were born into foster care. My parents said that everything was going to be all right, but they…

I never imagined a seven-year would have such a huge impact in my life, without him I would be a lost person living in this dark pit with no one. He may not understand the situation, but his innocence of not knowing allows me to become a part of the innocence that was never a part of my life. I have become a more compassionate person because I realized that I need to show him the support he gave me and help him in any situation. The process is still ongoing with the ups and the downs, but the space where the happiness was once empty is starting to fill. I can always count on my brother to put a smile on my face even if it is for the simplest things. My brother’s impact has made me want to become a therapist to help other children who may find themselves in a similar situation and give them the compassion and attention that I didn’t have for the longest…
