his skill in recent years. Last season, for example, Brady threw for 4,770 yards and threw 36 touchdown passes. During the early part of last year, specifically, Brady went on a tear.
He obliterated defenses and racked up fantasy points in bunches, as he appeared to work out his anger over the whole Deflategate situation.
Now that he has actually been punished, many expect him to have an even bigger chip on his shoulder. If his first game back is an indicator of things to come, that’s probably true. Brady threw for 403 yards and 3 touchdowns, not to mention rushing for 14 yards, in his return against the Cleveland Browns Sunday.
Stats like those, and the promise of similar ones to follow, have a clear impact on those who own Brady in fantasy leagues, as they get back one of the best players in the game.
“I feel like having Tom Brady back is going to bring a big turnaround to my season,” Josh Piper, a fantasy football rookie, said. “I feel like my fantasy points are going to come up a lot now that he’s back.”
Brady’s return also effects those who must now face teams with Brady on them. “It terrifies me,” Clayton Steen, a two-year fantasy football player, said of facing a team with Brady on it. “He’s the type of player that, even though he misses four games, he can pick up the slack for those games he missed with his point
production.”
Not only does Brady’s return impact those who own him, it also influences those who own other Patriots players.
“He’s able to make everyone around him calmer and better,” Steen said. “He kind of gives a veteran presence.”
In this case, those who will most likely be most effected by Brady’s return are wide receiver Julian Edelman and tight end Rob Gronkowski. Both have had subpar starts to their seasons in Brady’s absence, with Edelman hauling in a measly 196 receiving yards while failing to find the end zone and Gronkowski managing only 1 catch for 11 yards as he recovers from a hamstring injury.
In Brady’s return, Edelman caught five passes for 35 yards, though he did receive a substantial 10 targets. Similarly, Gronkowski had his best game of the season, hauling in 5 receptions on 7 targets for 109 yards.
Those performances only add credence to the advice of some fantasy football experts now that Brady is back.
“If you have any of the Patriots skill players who aren’t quarterbacks on your team, get them out there,” one host of the Washington Post’s Fantasy Football Beat podcast said.
Another player who may be influenced by Brady’s comeback is LeGarrette Blount, the Pats running back. Blount performed remarkably well in Brady’s absence, racking up 352 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the first four games. With Brady returning, perhaps his numbers will go up as defenses focus more on Tom Terrific.
On the other hand, he may suffer from fewer opportunities as the Patriots shift to a more passing-oriented offense with the return of their superstar. In Sunday’s game, Blount earned 18 carries, a decent number, but only managed 37 yards on those touches, though he managed to score a touchdown to provide owners with some points.
Regardless of the impact he has on Blount, it’s clear that Brady’s arrival represents a clear shake up in the world of fantasy football. One of the best in the business is back, and he now even more motivation to assert his dominance. Let opposing fantasy players beware.
