Tom Buchanan Character Analysis
The character Tom Buchanan has different role from all the other in the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Tom is apprehensive about Daisy’s actions and his background with being handed everything makes him unaware of how to react or treat the situation. The ability to control people has always been given to Tom and eventually becomes all he cares about. His recklessness has always been a part of him until it leads him to have one of his puppets cut the strings. The deceitful manner in which he presents himself and the way he expects others to treat him is a contraction that he is blind to. He does not enjoy the fact that Daisy is sneaking around with a different man. On the other hand, his affair with Myrtle is just as bad if not worse. Mr. Buchanan does not understand that she is only doing what he has been doing to her for their whole marriage. Nick says “Tom was evidently perturbed at Daisy’s running around alone,” (103) He is apprehensive about Daisy’s actions mostly because he sees Gatsby as a threat. He conscious feelings are correct in the long run, because Gatsby is a completely different man compared to him. Tom begins to point out how her “running around” is “not right.” Yet, this is the only time she has ever done this throughout their marriage, compared to the countless times Tom has done this with many other women. The time period may have another factor to put into account when Tom thinks men are the only ones who can get away with affairs and cheating. In The Great Gatsby, the reader finds that Tom Buchanan made up of being manipulative, careless, and hypocritical and it ultimately lead to his demise. Tom is very controlling and demands to rule those around him. Mr. Buchanan is aware that what he is doing is wrong but he continues to do it anyways because of his reckless behavior. He doesn’t comprehend that what he did was just as bad as what Daisy did. The traits and composure a man such as Tom has is not a valued or treasured by anyone and is looked highly down
