Tom Buchanan Character Traits
Tom Buchanan is a super-rich, hyper-masculine, aggressive thirty years old married man, who inherited his money from his parents. Not the most likable of the characters of the book and we don't get a chance to see him in a more sympathetic way. He belongs to a so-called "old money" group of people, class, which families are well known and respected. When tom was young, he moved to east in order to attend Yale university, where he also met his wife's cousin Nick Caraway at the University's social club. Tom Buchanan is a racist and isn't hiding it. He also is afraid of "colored" to take over the world, which makes a reader think, that he feels insecure being surrounded by other races "The idea is if we don't look out the white race will be - will be utterly submerged. It's all scientific stuff; it's been proved.". Same in the end of the novel, when Myrtle was supposed to leave the city with her husband and Daisy was half way gone to Gatsby, or when Wilson was about to kill him, thinking, that he was the one, who had an affaire with his wife and killed her to cover the tracks, Tom lies to Wilson, to free himself from the mistakes he has done. After he realizes, that Daisy is willing to leave him, he tries to manipulate her by saying: "And what's more, I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time." We see, that he becomes nervous and feels himself only then insecure, when the things he owns are about to vanish away. Careless person, which mostly thinks of himself and cares only about his

    a. Where on the thoracic surface do you auscultate to the tricuspid, mitral (bicuspid), pulmonary, and aortic valves? Auscultation for the tricuspid valve would be in the left sternal margin of the 5th intercostal space. The mitral valve sounds are heard over the apex of the heart (5th intercostal space) in line with the middle of the clavicle. Pulmonary valve sounds are auscultated at the 2nd intercostal space at the left sternal margin. The aortic valve is heard at the 2nd intercostal space of the right sternal margin.…

The first time Nick Carroway meets Tom Buchanan in person in Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby” we are shown a very clear impression of him. Nick described Tom as a “violent body”; already this shows Tom is a man of action who lets his actions speak for him. Nick continues to describe Tom by saying he is “always leaning aggressively forward…with a supercilious manner.” This shows that Tom finds himself above Nick and gives a hint of an aggressive man. Combine that with a “violent body” and I get the impression of a person I don’t want to be around. Tom’s supercilious manner is emphasised when he attempts to show his authority over George Wilson after Myrtle Wilson has been run over. “That car belonged to Gatsby, George Gatsby.” Previously Tom tried to take advantage of George by offering to sell him Gatsby’s car. This shows how little Tom cares for others, and that he is not afraid to try and control the situation. Again this makes me feel little respect, and instead contempts, for Tom Buchanan.…

Tom Buchanan was definitely an old money. He was a fickle, selfish, intriguing, arrogant guy. After reading ‘The Great Gatsby’, some people might consider all old money are asshole. But truth is old money is always modest, low profile. China has no old money, because all old money became poor after the liberation. But China has new money. The ‘rich second generation’ of new money always have Negative news. Why? Because they and their fathers didn’t have noble education, they don’t know how to be a man. But when they become old money, they will let their next generation to have noble…

It is very difficult for readers to feel anything other than contempt for Tom Buchanan throughout the novel. Fitzgerald uses Tom’s behaviour and attitude from the first time we are introduced to his character in chapter 1 to present him as a bully through his racist and unpleasant language assisted with his tough appearance. Daisy uses animalistic language to describe Tom as a ‘hulking physical specimen’ which highlights to the reader his potential strength and power of his build creating a sense of intimidation and fear that needs to be had for the other characters especially as he is powerful already through his riches.…

If someone asked you to describe Tom Buchanan from “The Great Gatsby” in one word, what word would you use? Arrogant? Cocky? Well, the truth of the matter is that you would need a lot more than a word to describe him. He has physically and verbally abused other people and he thinks that he can get away with anything because he is Tom Buchanan. His immoral actions and a lack of character show how unethical and corrupt he is. Tom Buchanan is an unscrupulous and depraved character with a sense of entitlement, which is made clear in the novel through his abusiveness, both physically and verbally. Tom appears to show no remorse for his actions, and he assumes and truly believes that the rules do not apply to him.…

Daisy Buchanan is a questionable character who, in ways, lets the reader down. Quickly, the author reveals Daisy’s character when he announces that Tom, Daisy’s husband, has “some woman in New York” (Fitzgerald 15). This news is startling because Daisy knows about the other woman. At this point, the reader can start to wonder what kind of person Daisy is for having knowledge of the affair, but doing absolutely nothing about it. At first the reader could see Daisy as this beautiful, elegant woman, but is then let down given the fact that Daisy is doing nothing about her husband’s affair.…

In The Great Gatsby, many characters were portrayed, all with their own little quirks and characteristics. However, one of the most interesting characters is Tom. That is because he is one of the most arrogant, self-serving characters in the book. He sometimes bursts out with white supremacist ideas, such as when he mentions that whites created civilization. He also has the habit of putting people down, such as when he has an affair with Myrtle, and makes fun of her husband. Lastly in an attempt to save himself, he sets a mourning George Wilson onto Gatsby.…

Tom is very narrow-minded, and believes he is much superior to everyone, and therefore, should have everything. This is clearly seen when he brings up his opinion over a book he claims he has been reading, as he says, “this fellow has worked out the whole thing. It’s up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things”(Pg.16). Tying in with the fact that Tom believes he deserves everything, it becomes clear he also loves to have total control over everything, even people. Thus, ultimately treating people like his property, and manipulating them along the way. This is seen by the fact that Daisy stays by Tom’s side, even though she and everybody clearly know about his mistress. He is able to not only have his wife, but his mistress on the side, who he parades around publicly, to his wife’s humiliation,” I was confused and a little disgusted as I drove away. It seemed to me that the thing for Daisy to do was to rush out of the house, child in arms — but apparently there were no such intentions in her head. As for Tom, the fact that he ‘had some woman in New York.’ was really less surprising than that he had been depressed by a book”(Pg.23). When a situation does not seem to go his way, Tom reacts aggressively, and violently, in an effort to manipulate the situation to benefit him. During one encounter with his mistress, Myrtle, she blatantly causes a scene and rebels against him, “some time toward midnight Tom Buchanan and Mrs. Wilson stood face to face, discussing in impassioned voices whether Mrs. Wilson had any right to mention Daisy's name. Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand”(Pg.41). He is definitely not the type of person to allow people to disobey him or humiliate him, or to even feel like control is slipping away from his…

In stark contrast to George Wilson, the novel’s wealthiest character is Tom Buchanan. Tom has all the money in the world to shower his love interests, yet his moral code is severely lacking. Buchanan’s idea of buying love is apparent as he buys an obscenely valued pearl necklace for his wife Daisy. As well and a ten-dollar impromptu purchase of a dog for his mistress Myrtle. Tom’s morals are shaped by his financial status as a rich citizen that can throw money around to cover his crimes and scandalous…

The extremely wealthy residents of East Egg have had their money passed down from relatives over the generations. They are viewed as more civilized people and their money often allows them to behave in a very uncivilized manner, without getting into trouble. For example, Tom Buchanan is a billionaire because of the money he inherited from his ancestors. However, it is very clear in the novel that Tom is having multiple affairs, even though he is a married man. These affairs are not questioned as it appears Tom's money and status allow him to behave as he wishes. Furthermore, Tom and his family have access to a large amount of alcohol during the prohibition era, which indicates he has both the influence and the money to obtain it. In addition, Tom has a strong mindset of the old reign that the white race has to be the dominant race: " if we don't look out the white race will be utterly submerged." and " It's up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these others races will have control of things." From his dialogue, he is fraught with racism that the old money should be the one have the authority to manipulate things because they produce materials and technology to make civilization. In addition, he has a traditional concept of women, especially his wife, Daisy. When she asks him for something, he seems not really care about her and seems to believe that women are the birth tool and do not have much right…

Tom in the book was seen as a very insecure character on how he treated Daisy and Myrtle he has done terrible things to them and he doesn’t really have any sympathy for an example of this is when he slap myrtle “Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!” shouted Mrs. Wilson. “I’ll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai ——”Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand.” Fitzgerald (Pg 41) This is a careless and selfish act and it shows he feels no consequence coming his way because he is rich, another example is when Tom cheats on Daisy but having the nerve to say women goes around too much for him even though he cheats. He uses the money as a scapegoat every day because he knows myrtle won’t stop talking to him because he has money unlike her man Wilson.I conclude that Wilson believes that just because he has money he can boss anyone around and he only thinks about himself in situations that involve him and somebody else.…
