There are many significant Canadians that have done incredible things for Canada. But, in my opinion, the greatest of all is Thomas Douglas. He was born on October 20, in Falkirk, Scotland. Douglas is historically significant in Canada because of the main reason why Canada is known for, it’s healthcare. He was known to be the “Father of Medicare”. He was the first to create a provincial hospital insurance program which ended up becoming national throughout Canada. An idealistic who achieved his dreams, he changed the face of Canadian politics. He created the safety net which we have as Canadians today that ensures we will always have the help we need. Tommy Douglas is what made Canada’s healthcare what it is, allowing people to get healthcare when they need it.…

Tommy Douglas demonstrates a true leader, he believed in access to healthcare for citizens from all walks of life. Douglas also valued a government that was for the people, by setting up a socialist government in North America, in which distribution of wealth and property is community based. Douglas portrayed an important role in Canadian history because he introduced universal hospitalization in Saskatchewan, set up a Medicare program, and was the first leader of a socialist government in North America which lead the way to other social reforms throughout Canada.…

    Thomas Midgley Jr.

Born on May 18, 1889, American engineer and chemist Thomas Midgley, Jr. was controversial for two of his discoveries. One, he discovered the Freon while working for General Motors in 1930. He intended it to be a safe non-toxic refrigerant to be used in household appliances, to replace the dangerous refrigerants used before like ammonia and propane. Freon and other CFCs soon replaced the various toxic or explosive substances previously used as refrigerants, and were later used in other applications, such as propellants in aerosol spray cans and asthma inhalers. The Society of Chemical Industry awarded Midgley the Perkin Medal in 1937 for this work. However, Midgley's discovery resulted in damage to the earth's Ozone layer.…

    F.Taylor

Frederick Winslow Taylor, the father of scientific management, was born on March 20, 1865, into an upper class liberal Philadelphia family. His father, a Princeton graduate and lawyer, made enough money from mortgages and did not have to keep a regular job. His mother was a spirited abolitionist and feminist who was said to have run an underground railroad station for runaway slaves. Both parents were Quakers and believed in high thinking and plain living. Parental authority was not questioned and children were seen and not heard in the Taylor family. Family members referred to each other as "thee" and "thou". At an early age Taylor learned self-control and his Quaker upbringing helped him to avoid conflicts with his peers and to resolve disagreements among them. Taylor was a compulsive adolescent and was always counting and measuring things to figure a better way of doing something. At age twelve, he invented a harness for himself to keep from sleeping on his back, hoping to avoid the nightmares he was having. At age twenty-five, Taylor earned an engineering degree at the Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey while holding a full time job. To date, no one has broken that record. Another of his achievements was his winning of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association doubles championship where he used a patented spoon-shaped racket that he himself designed. Even though he excelled in math and sports and had a degree from an exclusive college, Frederick chose to work as a machinist and pattern maker in Philadelphia at the Enterprise Hydraulic Works (Weisford 1987). After his apprenticeship at the hydraulic works plant, he became a common laborer at the Midvale Steel Company. He started as shop clerk and quickly progressed to machinist, foreman, maintenance foreman, and chief draftsman. Within six years he advanced to research director, then chief…

    Tom Robinson

Tom Robinson was an honest, trustworthy, loyal friend to me. Tom has never meant to hurt anybody, let alone a young woman. He was a respectful person and a good neighbor. He was always there to assist those in need. He could be standing with us today, carrying on his own like the good man he was. It was very clear to the citizens of Maycomb that Tom was an innocent man that was falsely accused by Mayella. They did not need solid proof because apparently his skin color was enough to get him in trouble. He was a respected member of the community who could inspire anybody to be kind to their neighbors. All of the events that happened to Tom Robinson leads us to believe that it is now punishable to assist a helpless girl. Tom would want us to have respectful behavior towards those who wrongly accused him despite the injustice that has taken place here. I grew up with Tom and have been through so much with him but I will never be as levelheaded as Tom was. Tom had a wife and child to support but that was not taken into consideration when the first strike he had in court was his skin color. Those of us who knew Tom well enough to know he would never commit a crime like he was accused of, will think fondly of him and appreciate the time we spent with Tom Robinson and be merry that he is in a less judgmental place, where he will be happier and we will mourn and be happy for him. Think fondly of those who put an effort forth to defend Tom Robinson and believed that this man's side of the story mattered and that his claims were not invalidated by his skin…
