Yesterday at around 11pm, Tom Robinson who had been accused by Bob Ewell of raping his daughter, Mayella Ewell, Tom Robinson has been charged for rape. The court case took place at the Maycomb County Courthouse and enormous crowd of people, both white and blacks, turned up to observe the trial. The prosecutor was Mr. Gilmer and the defence laywer was Atticus Finch. The case was presided over by Judge Taylor and a hand-picked jury. The result of the trial ended in favors of the plaintiffs, the Ewell family.…
Tom Robinson vs. Mayella Ewell. It was the trial it seemed everyone in Maycomb County had been waiting for. A white woman accusing a black man of rape and battery? I knew the outcome right from the very beginning; Tom Robinson would not win. Though, I appointed Atticus Finch to defend him. Might as well give the man a fighting chance not to be sentenced to death. While he was a Negro man, I knew Mr. Ewell was not a respected man in the community and I was liable to believe that Tom was not guilty. As Atticus professed, in the eyes of the law, no man should be discriminated against because of the color of his skin. I agreed.…
I am writing to bring to your attention the unfair trial of Tom Robinson. I think we all knew that the jury would say that he was guilty of the crime, but was he really? I don’t think he was, and I hope you and the readers of The Maycomb Tribune will help me fight this injustice. Good people like Atticus Finch, tried to prove the innocence of Tom Robinson. The real criminals here are Mayella Ewell and Bob Ewell for taking a man’s life simply because he was colored. Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.…
Tom Robinson is dead. Not a surprise for me, although people do seem startled by this news. I honestly don’t understand how it is possible. Each black person who passes through the courthouse doors doesn’t go back to the family. Usually negroes are, at the least, sentenced to a couple of years in prison, despite the crime ‘committed’. Now and then the punishment can even be worse, if the jury feels particularly discriminatory. At the end everybody who enters that hellish room leaves their children, parents or wives on their own in this cruel cruel world. The events continuously repeat over and over again, and there are always some innocent, optimistic imbeciles who keep hoping for a different verdict to escape the jury’s lips. Fools who keep…
I believe that everyone should have equal rights. The trial got me to think about the equality in our country even more than usual. Another black man was accused of something that he never did. Even though I did not go to the trial, I feet impacted by the verdict. I feel that my beliefs about equal rights were reassured from the trial. Atticus is an excellent lawyer, and so I assume that he made a great case. Tom Robinson was probably clearly innocent, but that is just the unfairness in our country. Hopefully there will be change in the near…
The Tom Robinson case in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee shows unfairness and inequality in colored people compared to whites. Tom Robinson is a black man who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman. Evidence clearly shows that Tom did not commit rape, but the jury still found him guilty according to his skin color. Tom now has to face his life in misery, knowing that he didn’t do anything wrong. The Declaration of Independence and Tom’s inspiring lawyer, Atticus Finch, both say that “all men are created equal”. Based on this classic American novel, not everyone gets an equitable trial and is treated fairly. The Tom Robinson trial was evident of injustice and inequity. Harper Lee's story proves that not everyone is treated equally, especially in court.…
This was not his choice or decision. When Tom Robinson was accused of committing a rape, every person knew that no matter how good Atticus’s arguments were, Robinson would be found guilty simply because he was black. Blacks were considered as flaws in a wannabe-utopian society. They were treated as if they were rodents, some inferior animals that were not human because they had a dark skin tone. Being a black man, Robinson lived with this stereotype his entire life. Even though people treated Robinson worse than they would treat an animal, Robinson felt no hate towards these people. He was very polite towards them; he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Unfortunately, Tom Robinson could not change the outlook of the…
Like a mockingbird, Tom Robinson was an innocent creature who did no harm to anyone. Tom, black man with a wife and children was wrongfully accused of raping a white woman. He went out of his way to help to help Magellan Ewell many times. Not once was Tom awarded for his hard work, on the contary he was found guilty of raping her. Tom was found guilty not because of his actions but because of his race. Killing Tom was a sin just like it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. The jury and prison guards thought that finding him guilty and killing him was not a big deal. Not everyone shared Atticus Finch's integrity and perspective in that time. Tom Robinson was a good man who was wrongfully targeted.…
I believe the equality of this trial is what will kill the evidence I have for my side of the case. We, as humans, are in a time where black people are known as the inferior race. They are treated…
This incident proved how the police did little to stop the racial discrimination that was been done against African Americans, which only enraged the black population. Not only that but it also angered many whites who wanted to keep controlling the African American community. This incident caused African Americans to stand up and fight for equality. Unfortunately, this incident only caused the violence to increase racial discrimination against blacks rather then aiding them in moving toward…
Tom Robinson was a man who received no justice because of the color of his skin. Justice in and out of the courtroom is a playing theme in To Kill a Mockingbird. We learn that justice is not given to everyone because of the majority belief of prejudice in society. People are discriminated because of the color of their skin, their age, or the things they believe in. Tom, and Scout are all prime examples of this theme.…
In the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it says that everyone should be endowed with equal rights and treated in the spirit of brotherhood. Tom was the receptionist of neither of these things. He was charged with the capital crime of rape because his skin color was what determined his reputability in the racist eyes of the jury. While in court, Tom Robinson was on the recieving end of sneers and racial jeers. This racial injustice is disrespectful and not in the spirit of brotherhood.…
The Scottsboro case contributed to this situation in a very large way. Before the case blacks were automatically judged because the color of their skin. The two women who were allegedly raped on the train were white. All eight of the men accused were black men under the age of twenty. Considering these things it is obvious to see that many people treated the Scottsboro boys differently, because of their skin color. Recently, news articles have been released telling stories of a white police officer who threw a disobedient black girl on the ground. Many are making the argument, that because the police officer is white and the girl is black, he only harmed her because of her color. Others saying that if , instead, she was white, then none of this would have happened. Also, along with this story the argument could be made the same with the Scottsboro case. Maybe if the men and the women would have been the same color, then the case wouldn't have been such a big deal.…
This is a very troublesome predicament. The abusing of ones power of authority is ridiculous and must be put to a stop. Many innocent black lives have been taken away just because of this abuse of power.Take the killing of Trayvon Martin,Alton Sterling,…
The novel To Kill A Mockingbird is interesting because you see Tom Robinson (a black man accused of rape) face a battle that you know he will lose. He is facing a legal system that has no desire to make the…
