Tom Sawyer Tone Tone is used frequently to show feelings in stories; it can change the outcome of how the story is told. Mark Twain, the author of the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, uses tone to help establish the feelings of the character during each part of the story. Tom Sawyer is about the life of a boy who lies very often. In the beginning of the story, Tom starts out by lying very often to avoid punishment.
