The word Shiloh is said to be Hebrew for “place of peace,” however, in April of 1862, the Battle of Shiloh became the site of one of the deadliest conflicts in Civil War history. With over 23,000 casualties, the battle, fought in Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee played an important role in Union’s progress in the western theater. The Battle of Shiloh proved to be more challenging and complex due to the surprise attack initiated by the Confederates. Canada had entered the War to End All Wars out of necessity, and had came out bruised, battered, but stronger than ever. Back home, Canada struggled with conscription among debates centered on nationalism and imperialism. The Military Service Act of 1917 had severely wounded the trust of French-Canadians, targeted farmers, and pacifists. This all resulted in utter chaos in a culmination of riots and protests on the streets of Canada, with little to show for on the actual battlefields of Europe. However, on the battlefields of Europe, volunteer Canadian troops had gone up and above the call of duty during their careers, specifically during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. During that battle, the Canadian Corps fought as a single unit instead of four…

Plutarch stated, “The poor go to war, to fight and die for the delights, riches, and superfluities of others.” The Continental Army at Valley Forge were for sure not treated with enough respect, support, and enthusiasm as it takes to win the war. Around half of the soldiers at Valley Forge, as I recall, were reported sick in the first few months. Also, the whole Army was not presented warm clothes and warm shelters. We only had one pair of socks, shoes, and everything, which got torn apart not far into the stay. British treatment and clothes were better than our army had. Supplies for the Continental Army only lasted for about a month. Congress was of little help, as well as Americans back at home. I have decided to not re-enlist for three reasons which are the conditions of living, the little help from the people, and too many sicknesses and deaths.…

After the Civil War many of the “Lost Cause” advocates stated that their work was not political, this statement is proved correct as the majority of their work was social. The South’s desire to protect the “southern way of life” was the main cause of the “Lost Cause”. Reconstruction left behind the unfortunate legacy of unsuccessfully ending segregation among races in the South, as it did little to fix the issues that the Civil War was fought for.…
