Tomb Raider: Gender Stereotypes
For fans that don't know, there are two different kinds of Lara Croft fans. Those who think she is sexy, and those who think she is sexy. OK, so there is one type of Lara Croft fan because it is almost a fact that Lara Croft is one of the most attractive video game characters of all-time. Lara Croft, whether or not the makers of Tomb Raider wanted it or not, has become an ultimate sex symbol for video gaming.

LARA CROFT IS ONE OF A KIND

There are not many video game female protagonists that are as popular as Lara Croft is. It is almost guaranteed that half her popularity is due to the fact that so many have a crush on her. This is the reality of the situation, Lara Croft is popular because of how sexy she is. It would be nice if there was a reason outside of that, but with how dominant this world is on sex symbols there really is not. That is what makers her one of a kind; the fact that a majority of her fan base is there simply due to her looks. There are probably a select few that honestly like her because of her characterization, personality, and other features, but not many. This has led to Tomb Raider gaining very good popularity, but is it all due to how good looking Lara Croft is? Also, would Tomb Raider be as popular if the protagonist was a normal guy? These questions are very difficult to answer because ever since she

There is no denying that Lara Croft is smoking, but is she really a good symbol for video gaming? One thing that needs to be remembered is there are some video games that send very bad messages with outrageous violence, pervasive language, and explicit sexual activity. There are some games that would shock some people with how graphic they are, so Lara Croft is nothing compared to some gaming figures. However, none of those characters could match up to Lara Croft's popularity so she would get criticized more. With that being said, Lara Croft is not that bad of an influence, but that is up to

Some say she is only remembered by her sex appeal and drug habits but it is so much more than that to me. I personally look past the sex and drugs and look at how she is so comfortable in her own skin and that just because she has some curves that it doesn’t make her “ugly” or “fat” it just makes her a little more meaty than most models are. She doesn’t cover herself up more because she is bigger she embraces it in a way to show other women that it is okay to be more the 100 pounds and that you can still be beautiful even if you’re “overweight.” And she never let the people who didn’t agree with her decisions and opinions change her and I think that is a big problem in our world…

Lady Devimon may look like it stepped out of a Tim Burton movie, or a long lost relative to Spawn. Nevertheless, this Fallen Angel Digimon has goth-chic in spades. Moreover, a genuine rival to Angewomon made only more dramatic by their epic showdowns in the anime series. Lady Devimon's voracious determination to crush the enemy is surprisingly sexy. Catfights such as these are what the fans crave for.…

In Chinatown, she is the widow of a murdered city official with a secret she is keeping from the rest of the word. In The Maltese Falcon, perhaps the most widely known detective film noir, she is the woman at the heart of a missing person’s case that keeps the audience guessing through the entire running time. As defined by the website Film Noir Studies, “she refuses to play the role of devoted wife and loving mother that mainstream society prescribes for women. She finds marriage to be confining, loveless, sexless, and dull, and she uses all of her cunning and sexual attractiveness to gain her independence” (Bayer.) This in itself may be part of the reason why we don’t see her as the hero of film noir. She is a character that contains traits that are traditionally rejected in women. Even with her all-around dynamism, she is often seen just as the sidekick to the detective or his one-dimensional…

When we were small children, our gender didn't mean much other than our anatomy. We recognized differences between ourselves and the opposite sex, but it didn't mean much as far as how we acted. The older that we got, observation and instruction began to dictate our behavior based on gender. We saw other children of the same gender acting a certain way and then we made the connection that that was how we were supposed to act also. Along with observation, adults and other older children told us things like, "boys don't cry" and "you're such a pretty girl." Statements like these focus on stereotypes of genders: the masculinity of men and the appearance of women. We are not born knowing these stereotypes. The world and culture around us cultivates the stereotypes that we will see in the future. As we grow up and learn these stereotypes in America, our…

Video gaming is the largest entertainment industry, with an estimated 1.2 billion people engaged worldwide. Whilst women represent 46% of gamers and female game creators are increasing, games are still predominately made by and for men. As a result, misogynistic and sexist representations of women are created in the interest of male fantasy that is reflected in both game context and game play. Throughout many video games a patriarchal culture of sexism is maintained, reinforced and normalised through the context, stereotypical character representations, online bullying and harassment. This culture of sexism is, however being challenged by gamers and game developers in a way that is liberating and empowering to women in the gaming sphere.…

It lies behind who the developers are, the male audience, and the pervasiveness of over-sexualization and objectification towards female characters. (Henning) The majority of those involved in the developing process, from the producers and artists to the marketers, are male. () As a result, their collective interpretation of women in particular are not always representative. () This means their decisions for characters are geared towards their own understandings of society, leaving out representation or proper representation minorities. Yet, this is not solely the fault of the developers, but also the male audience. () The audiences is the reason video games are as popular as they are, ultimately if the male audience is fine with how female characters or minorities are represented, then the developers will continue with the stereotyping. This creates an endless gender paradox (), if the male audience is complacent with female characters becoming objects to progress the plot of a game (e.g. killing them to empower a male character), having underdeveloped or tropic characteristics, or being sexually exploited, then the developers will be complacent as…

Stereotypes are evident throughout all forms of media. Television shows and movies in particular use stereotypes to eliminate the details of a character, this allows the audience to know them without needing to spend vast amounts of time developing the character. However, stereotypes often create characters that poke fun or marginalize the group the stereotype represents. Since media stereotypes are used so often, the same stereotype being repeated over and over again, they become the only way an audience views the marginalized group. Stereotypes can have many different effects on the ways the real being marginalized in the stereotype live: they may feel ashamed to branch out from activities defined by their stereotype, they may be forced…

People have contributed to gender stereotypes by refusing to the chain. Cooking is now only women’s job, having makeup on is the only way to be classified as beautiful, and lastly; to be a man, you must act manly. Gender stereotypes have been obscured by today’s society through all forms; media, actions, rules, and obligations set by certain communities.…

This view point is supported by the general media, despite the creator of Lara Croft (Toby Gards) intentions for her to be sexy "only because of her power". This can be seen through Robert Ashley of Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine description of Lara Croft as the first video game character openly thought of as sexy plus moreover Publications like Play, GameTrailers, and PlayStation Magazine listed big breasts as one of the character's most famous attributes. Her sex appeal is so great that male players perform in-game actions to make Lara Croft repeatedly say phrases and view closer camera angles of her bust, while pornography featuring the character has been distributed via the internet.…
