Dutch, Danish, Italian, Polish and Spanish. The genre that the novel was written in is action and adventure. John was born on the 27th of September in the year 1950, currently aged 66. John Marsden became an author because it was what he loved doing the most and some of the other authors that have inspired him were ‘thriller authors’ as he would put it, such as Ian Fleming, Shakespeare, Hammond Innes, Alistair Maclean and Neville Shute.
Tomorrow When The War Began is a novel that John Marsden wrote that was influenced by historical, cultural and other factors.
He first got the idea of writing about a future war with another country or an invasion in Australia, partly from WWII where he was sure that even most Australians aren’t aware of how close this country came to being invaded by Japan. He also once said that, “I was curious to know how today’s teenagers might react if they were placed in the kinds of situations that their grandparents and great grandparents faced back in the 20th century.” Basically, Marsden was interested in how the untested Australian youth would react to extreme circumstances. At the time, there were political concerns about political relations to the other country most likely Indonesia. But political and cultural landscape is now very different. Since the book was first published, we have had Bali bombings; terrorist attacks and Australian troops have served in east Timor, Iraq and now Afghanistan. This could possibly mean that Tomorrow When The War Began has escalated from a piece of entertainment to a political indication. Stuart Beattie, the writer and director of the film said that, “Since 9/11, the idea that people can come into your country and cause you harm is the world we live in. It's been that way in other parts of the world for a long time but it's only recently happened in the US and Australia; Britain had the IRA for many
years.”
When researching about the author of the novel Tomorrow When The War Began, John Marsden, I did notice some personal context as an influence in the text. One of the personal contexts that he had was that he had an occupation as an English teacher as well as a school principal once. By being an English teacher and teaching a wide range of literature, this allows him to have experience of narrative structures and a general view of novel writing. The other part of his personal context that I could see that is an influence in the text is that, as I said before, he has had many famous authors such as Shakespeare, that have inspired him to do what he loves the most, writing novels (or even sequels).
