Toni The Superhero By R. D. Base

Toni the Superhero is a children’s book written by R.D.Base. In simple, easy-to-understand sentences, the author has shown that kids today can be superheroes by doing ordinary everyday things. This book has small sentences which is perfect for any child learning to read and for any preschool teacher teaching their students to read. The activities depicted are very relevant to the kids of today.

The main character, Toni, is depicted doing daily chores and has regular hobbies. He plays games, read books and swims. He also helps out his mother at home, dusts, sweeps and eats vegetables. All these actions are shown as “superhero” ones and “cool” things to do by illustrating that Toni does it with a superhero attire. The drawing, dancing and singing activities encourage art and creativity while the playing, jumping, swimming and running activities motivate kids to participate in physical outdoor activities.

The illustrations enhance the deeper meaning of the simple sentences. Toni eating dinner is not just him eating a meal. The supporting image shows him eating a variety of vegetables and kitchen counter has fruits placed on it. Toni dancing with his mom emphasizes on the importance of spending time with family. I liked that a lot of different activities were encouraged by the author to the young readers. Sleeping is as important as physical outdoor activities and eating vegetables. The sentences were as small as possible consisting of only a subject, verb and object. This is perfect for the target audience of children who are just starting to read and for teachers who teach students of that age. The illustrations require modifications. The issue I mentioned in the dining room image is there in a few other images also in the book. It is easier to follow a plot if the supporting images are as realistic to the plot as
