Self-esteem is a way a child feels about themselves. Everyone has it in different degrees. A child with high self-esteem generally feels good about themselves and feels they have a lot to offer. A child with low or poor self-esteem generally feels worthless and that they have little to contribute. Without positive self-esteem it is highly unlikely that a child would have a full, happy and productive life. The development of self-esteem starts very early in life. For example, when a child learns to walk or talk they feel a sense of having achieved something. Praise and encouragement at this point from parents, or people important in their life, boosts the positive feelings they have about themselves and encourages the child to go on achieving. Love, praise and encouragement are essential elements in helping a child develop a positive self-esteem.…
Children and young people who feel good about themselves and have a good level of confidence will be able to relate to others in a more positive, happy encouraging way. This can then influence them emotionally and can help them grow in confidence, within group situations and make them be able to take part in team playing with their peers. It is very important that practitioners within the school setting helps all children and young people to be able to feel positive about themselves and to develop self-esteem as this helps the children and young people overcome situations and cope with demanding circumstances such as disappointment, stress, worry and hurt feelings letting them know to keep trying, be positive and to not give up. Low self-esteem could lead to a child or young person putting themselves down and feeling belittled or not feeling good enough and then they may start to compare themselves with other children in the group if they can’t do something that another child can. This can affect their emotional wellbeing if they think that they aren’t doing as well as…

Self-esteem being about how one emotionally sees themselves whether it be positive or negative. I will admit I can’t always tell if my grandma can’t fully remember how she felt around those years but she told me she thought high of herself. She always wanted to be happy and feel happy and she said it started with how she felt. Being confident in herself probably even helped her with being outgoing and getting along with everyone. I can recall a resent family gathering where my aunt told my grandma how she looked tired and exhausted. For some this could bring someone’s self-esteem down but with my grandma it never fazed her she replied, “why do I care, I’m old, looks aren’t everything anymore.” My grandma always believed that it only matters what you feel about yourself and not what others…
Encouraging a healthy self-esteem can be done as simply as asking a child what s/he learned at school and actually listening to what the child says. Giving the child attention and feedback will help them to feel like an important part of the family. Some people feel that in order to foster a child’s self-esteem means to buy them all the popular toys, clothes, accessories etc. When in truth, simply allowing the child to feel loved, accepted for who they are, and important will increase or maintain the child’s self-esteem. Society today tends to focus on the physical attributes of people rather than what is on the inside. There are many beautiful people who are seen as ugly because their personality is such. On the other hand there are physically unattractive people who are seen as beautiful because their personality and kindness for others shines…

Any women outside of these parameters are considered to need help with their appearance to achieve this status of beauty. The desire to adhere to these ridiculous standards can lead to medical problem, such as bulimia and anorexia. A certain appearance, or the lack thereof, can also affect a woman’s career. For example, dressing too provocative or in some cases not provocative enough. We are given the message that our value depends on our physical…
Many people have unfortunately become victims of the outstanding pressures to look gorgeous, thin, and fashionable. This statement has caught along with a vast majority of individuals, who become quite apprehensive with their bodies, because they sincerely believe it lacks the picture-perfect image. Quite a few people are increasingly influenced by images viewed in the media. From hit TV shows, to movie stars, to fashion models in magazines, to billboard ads, a lot of individuals wonder why they can't have the same hot body like their desired celebrity, especially pre-teen girls. As many as one-third of girls aged 10 to 14 are trying to lose weight, according to research at The Hospital for Sick Children. Another symptom of a lack of self-esteem is mild depression, which may eventually lead up to suicidal thoughts if not treated. The Self-Esteem Institute claims, " Low self-esteem is actually a thinking disorder in which an individual views himself as inadequate, unworthy, unlovable, and/or incompetent. Once formed, this negative view of self permeates every thought, producing faulty assumptions, and ongoing self-defeating behavior." At sometime, the individual may become anti-social, and will begin to withdraw from society. This is because they don’t have the social skills required, and simply can’t fit in with the public. It is mind boggling how our physical aspect plays a role on our emotions. Consequently, it can also puts a dent in our wallets.…
