The world had been exposed to the harsh realism of the terrible things that Nazi Germany had been doing. This would include performing Genocide, which is the mass murder of a single race. Hitler and his followers had brainwashed the German people into obtaining their full support in the war, and in the terrible inhumane things he was doing to the Jewish people. Hitler had used the Jewish people as a scapegoat, for all the trouble the World War 1 had brought them. The “ two minute plan “ in 1984 focuses on generating hatred of the enemies of the Party, particularly a man named Goldstein. He was described as having a Jewish face as well as a Jewish name. Orwell is obviously trying to include Hitler’s hate of the Jews and how they were blamed for the struggles. One of the main reasons Hitler rose to power was because of the terrible conditions Germany was left in after the first World War. They were in terrible debt with the entire World. They were forced to pay all the costs that the war brought, which led the country into a very deep depression. Many people were dying of hunger, famine, and disease. Crime ran amuck and with no proper leader, Germany was feeling the full effects of the Treaty of Versailles ( Treaty that had ended World War 1 ).
