Objective: Tourism is a highly dynamic industry. Yet in spite of this, very little is understood and appreciated on how tourism can actually contribute to the social growth of any tourist destination. This chapter would provide the basic concepts of tourism.
Tourism as defined by WTO (World Tourism Organization), is the activities of persons travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes.
What is a Traveler? -any person on a trip between two or more countries or between two or more localities within his/ her country of usual residence.
Visitor – a traveler who goes to a country other than which he has his usual residence but outside his usual environment for a period not exceeding 12 months and whose main purpose of visit is other than the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited.
Categories of Visitors
1. Same-day Visitors – visitors who do not spend the night in a collective or private accommodation in the country visited. These were previously called Excursionists.
2. Tourists – visitors who stay in the country visited for at least one night. These include business travelers. Tourists are generally regarded as pleasure travelers.
Other Types of Travelers who are termed NON-VISITORS include:
1. Border worker 2. Temporary and permanent immigrants 3. Nomads (no permanent residence but moves from one place to another, roams aimlessly) 4. Transit passengers (who does not leave the transit area of the airport or port, including transfers between airports and ports) 5. Refugees (one who flees for safety to a foreign country) 6. Members of the armed forces (when they travel from one country of origin to the duty station and vice versa, including household servants and dependents accompanying them) 7.
