1.1 Introduction
Gauteng is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. It was formed from part of the old Transvaal Province after South Africa's first all-race elections on 27 April 1994. It was initially named Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging (PWV) and was renamed "Gauteng" in December 1994. It is situated in the Highveld. The aim of my report is to convince the committee to award Gauteng the bid to host the conference in 2015.
Gauteng can offer local offering which is a short walk away from the SWF is Soweto Outdoor Adventures, which offers bungi-jumping, quad-biking, paint-ball games and other exciting activities. Soweto Outdoor Adventures is part of a broader collective called SoWeToo, an exciting collective of small tourism businesses within the township. SoWeToo has developed “the Red Taxi” which links up with the Red Bus, otherwise known as the Hop On-Hop-Off Bus.
This new addition to the Jo’burg cityscape is a unique and original day tour which links points of interest in the city, including Gautrain Park Station (where the route starts), Constitution Hill, the Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City, where adventurous people can hop off and hop into the red taxi bound for Soweto.
The other unique selling point that is bringing the City Centre alive is Maboneng, meaning a “ a place of light” a Jo’burg inner city precinct that promotes urban renewal through art galleries, restaurants, a vibrant flea market and Salsa Sunday- places and events that are getting people to celebrate Jo’burg’s core with pleasure and pride
