Introduction
For my assignment, I have selected the article 'Tourism industry to get S$905 Million over 5 years' by Ng Kai Ling of the Straits Times Newspaper as my newspaper article. The article indicates our Singapore government's plan to allocate $905 million spread over 5 years to make our country even more attractive to tourists, with hope that the amount of visitations, the duration of their stays and their spending capacity of these tourists will increases.
The article's key themes are the role of the Singapore Government for the continuation of growth of tourism and to attract Singaporeans to the service sector of tourism, increasing the participation of the local workforce in the industry. The tourism industry plays an importance part of the nation's economic growth, environmental involvement and the sociocultural evolution. The government's latest investment in tourism is a significant one, one that promises continuation on expanding tourism products for the country.
This S$905 million investment is part of the S$2 billion Tourism Development Fund, the target was to attract over 17 million tourists into our country and compile around S$30 billion in tourism receipts by 2015. With this large sum of money invested into the tourism industry, the government's aim to enforce the country's current position as a lifestyle and business event hub.
With our limited space, history that dated only a couple of century back and few natural and cultural attractions, Singapore is not a natural tourism spot for the common tourist. With our limited resources, the only way to attract tourists to our country is by generating interest and being useful to the world in a variety of ways. For the past two decades, Singapore tourism has progressed from a stopover point for the other more exotic destination such Bali and Koh Samui for the international tourists to a prior destination on her own.
