Tourism helps in breaking down of barriers set by boundaries such as language barriers, prejudices, and suspicions that exists between nations. The people start co-existing as a result and this has positive effects. The best way to know another nation is to go there and when massive numbers of people travel, the rigid boundaries that keep people in their own cocoons tend to shrink. As a result a positive move towards international understanding is born and begins to operate. Tourism initiatives are called upon to break the ideological and political barriers in places where there is no peace. This has made government leaders to work towards maintaining peace in their countries. “A number of governments have recognized that tourism, which brings economic benefits, requires peaceful circumstances in which to operate effectively” (Moufakkir & Kelly, 2010, p. xx).
Tourism earns a country foreign exchange making it an important economic activity. Especially in the developing countries it is an important boost to the economy. The developing countries promote themselves as tourism destinations. It generates substantial economic benefits for both the tourists’ home country and the host’s country.
