Most countries – be they developed or developing, rich or poor, and large or small – compete for a larger share of the international tourism dollars. They capitalize on their cultural heritage, historic landmarks, rich wildlife, ancient monuments, scenic beauty, and other distinctive attractions and invest in world class resorts, hotels, and entertainment facilities to increase their appeal to the greatest numbers and different types of international travelers. However, success in international tourism is not without a cost. Aside from the investment needed for developing, upgrading, and maintaining the tourism infrastructure, there are environmental and social costs that need to be measured and carefully managed. Although many economists point to the revenues that are earned by destination countries from international tourism, some observers in developing countries show concern about the creation of a state of economic, political and cultural dependency that may have long-term negative consequences.…

This model is based on the construction of mega super inclusive resorts, which require engineering solutions such as dredging, construction and limestone blasting in order to create swimming beaches, and construct buildings a few meters away from the high water mark. Construction and operation of tourist facilities such as hotels and other attractions also result in significant alterations to the terrestrial environment, trees, insects, birds etc. Operation of these entities also results in the diversion of resources such as water and electricity which could have been used elsewhere in the society.…

In general, the impacts of tourism vary according to the number and nature of tourists and the characteristics of the site. The individual tourist normally has a relatively small impact. Problems arise, however, if the number of tourists is large or the resource overused. Thus although tourism can be a lucrative source of revenue for a protected area, it can also represent a major management problem. As with most problems, the negative impacts of tourism can only be managed effectively if they have been identified, measured and evaluated. Once this has been done, tailored management responses can be created.…

Defining “rural” specifically is connected with a number of problems, given the different characteristics of the regions. Eventually, there are rural areas near urban ones and rural areas which are far away from urban structures. So, rural areas are often defined differently depending on the policy objectives. The OECD defines it on the basis of population density as ‘dominantly rural’ or ‘dominantly urban’ and bases this on a percentage of the population. Following the OECD, communities with less than 150 inhabitants per square kilometer are classified as rural. This means in general that 93% of the area of the EU is ‘rural’ and 20% of the population lives in rural areas. Further, and 45% of gross value added is produced, and 53% of jobs are in rural areas, whereas their income is almost of half of the income in urban areas. This fact and the structural change in agriculture and forestry production lead to massive problems in these regions.…
