We would also like to appreciate the commitment of staff members of Sri Lanka tourism development authority, who have helped us to obtain information of past situations, present position and future estimation of tourism industry in Sri Lanka.
Executive summary

The purpose of this report is to develop comprehensive strategic plan to re-engineer tourism industry in Sri Lanka and to earn foreign exchange to the country. The development of the plan was carried out by considering thorough analysis of the industry by carrying out environmental scanning and identifying internal capabilities. The strategies were formulated based on the analysis and it is identified that social, cultural, religious and environmental values demonstrate excessive impact on tourism industry in Sri Lanka.

The analysis also revealed that aggressive competitive strategies implemented by neighboring counties have become more challenging and it is vital to focus more on developing human resources of the sector in order to deliver world class service to the tourists who arrives Sri Lanka. The strategies for developing infrastructure, providing more accommodation facilities to cater future demand, publicity and marketing, human resource development and new tourism products development such as eco, educational, adventure, medical and casino tourism were formulated and provided implementation plan for each strategy formulated considering practicability of applying the strategies in Sri Lanka context. Consequently, monitoring and evaluation plan was also included in order to ensure that formulated strategies will be implemented appropriately.
