BURMA CASE STUDY
Welcome to this case study put together for you by Tourism Concern. We are a charity whose specific aim is to fight exploitation in tourism. For several years we have been running a campaign to raise awareness of the situation in Burma and present information to interested parties including tour operators, tourists, members, members of the public and students.
This case study has been produced for students of travel and tourism courses – predominantly at level 3 - and can be used to provide activities related to the following units:

This material contains background information: the sequence of events leading up to the present situation in Burma; a description of the country and its interest in tourism. The role of Tourism Concern and its stance on Burma is also presented. The situation is far from straightforward and different views are presented in order for learners to gain an appreciation of the arguments for and against visiting Burma on holiday. By gaining an overall understanding it is hoped that they will be in a position to engage in the role play.
Practitioners may use the questions below as prompts to create classroom discussion and debate. Within the context of this material it is hoped that learners conduct further research of their own in order to further their personal understanding of Burma from different angles.
