This paper analyses Sustainability in the Travel and Tourism Industry, measures and indicators used to monitor performance. Also some examples of tour operators and airlines environmental projects have been discussed to understand the tourism organizations measures implement for the development of sustainable tourism. Strategies used to overcome limitations and benefits of sustainable tourism are also explained with a number of significant points in order to highlight the importance of sustainability in the Travel and Tourism Industry. 1. INTRODUCTION
Travel and tourism industries have been implementing and developing new measures in order to preserve the environment and reduce costs. The hospitality industries implemented energy saving, recycling and waste reduction measures, airlines introduced quieter fuel efficient aircrafts, and while the environmental visitors have been growing over the years the government bodies make use of tourism to achieve sustainability development in geographical areas, regenerating old industries or using the rural based tourism to compensate for the decline of traditional agriculture.
