Provide an overview of the tourism activities in Cyprus prior to the contemporary development and planning of tourism. Cyprus had many tourism activities prior to the contemporary development and planning of tourism. Cyprus was an island whose tourism had not reached full development. According to Godfrey (1996) “there were approximately 21,000 visitor arrivals and 4000 beds where between five towns accounted for less than one third of all tourist beds”(p. 65). The Cypress Tourism Organization (CTO) which started in the late 1960’s was in charge of the promotion, marketing, and development of tourism in an effort to create growth throughout the island. “Policy was consistently aimed at attracting high and middle income visitors to the exclusion of mass tourism” (Godfrey, 1996, p.66). The results of Cypress playing a central role in Tourism could help streamline it’s’ economy. A major activity that took place was the Turkish invasion that occurred in 1974 placing a hold on all economic activity. The Turkish soldiers invaded the island with the purpose of “claiming to invoke the Treatee of Guarantee (signed at independence between Britain, Greece, and Turkey) and effectively dividing the island in half” (Godfrey, 1996, p.66). Due to this invasion Cypress lost a significant amount of territory including the capability of manufacturing and agriculture, at least half of the buildings used for catering and entertainment, majority of accommodations and newly constructed hotels, and the closure of the airport which denied entry to commercial traffic, therefore, bringing the amount of visitors down to a minimum. With the Cyprus tourism sinking, it left the government body discouraged. In order to meet the demand, eventually, the government came up with ideas to try and manage the development of facilities away from beach
