In summary, in response to the question; “How successful are the defences in your chosen area?” I feel that the defences in Walton-on-the-Naze are successful to a certain extent due to the following reasons. Firstly, some resources showed that the defences were socially sustainable while other resources highlighted the fact that they were economically sustainable even if they weren’t aesthetically pleasing. This was also the case for defences that were more environmentally sustainable. The different types of defences all had a varying amount of these 3 categories, some being more successful in one area than another. For example, sea walls are more economically sustainable because, even though they are the most expensive defence, they have the longest lifespan due to the durable material they are constricted from (concrete). However, because of this construction and installation technique, it wouldn’t be environmentally or socially sustainable as it would cause a lot of noise and might deter wildlife from the area temporarily. The defence with the highest level of social sustainability is beach replenishment because it doesn’t visually change the area too much and would help attract tourists to the area. It would also cause limited disturbance to the residents which gives it the social aspect. On the other hand, it isn’t economically sustainable because it wouldn’t be cost effective to replenish the whole coast of Walton as certain areas are more prone to erosion, meaning the…

Milwaukee County is responsibly for their own sewer system and the affect that it has on their residents (Dorfman, 2004). Similar to the negative effects in the tragedy of the commons the Milwaukee sewer system has been negatively affecting the Milwaukee Country community as well as including Lake Michigan. The tragedy of the commons talked about how the farmers would raise their cattle near an open grazing area where they would allow their cattle to graze without the worry about having to pay for anything (2005, p.151). Although, when supplies became limited the farmers were responsible for buying their own food for their cattle to eat and it was during this time the cattle were watched how much they would eat. This environmental issue…

It was not like they said it would be. Taking a cold shower from a pipe coming out of the basement wall of a seventy-five-year-old school was not fun. They said this would be the best week of my summer. Until I began writing this essay, I had never thought about the impact my experiences on Appalachian Service Project mission trips had contributed to my transition from childhood to adulthood. However, now I realize that not only was I affecting other people’s lives, but the work I was doing was also changing me. That was the best week of my summer, and so have the two following trips been that I have taken.…

This summer I took a trip with my church to the Appalachian mountains on a service project. The trip was through an organization called the ASP or Appalachian Service Project. The goal of this organization is to make homes dryer, safer and warmer for people in need of better living conditions. Durring my trip there we helped a family with four children all under the age of four. They had electricy but they did not have suffiecent running water. As the week progressed my team of people from my church helped fix the house. We helped this family close a hole in the side of their house made from the previous winter, we helped fix the stairs up the side of the mountain to their house and we gave their plumbing system back to them. All of the things we did made their house safer to live in. The hole that was fixed in the side of the house would cut down the amount of money the family would have to spend on keeping the house warm in the winter, The stairs we built gave them access to their house without the change of slipping down the side of the mountain. The plumbing was fixed and we were able…

On the surface, Ken Jackson and C.P. Ellis led remarkably similar lives. As Studs Terkel records their stories, it is noted that both are born into low-income families with alcoholic fathers, neither one cared for school, and both got into their own sorts of trouble, for Jackson gangs and prison, for Ellis the Klan. And both men end up in relatively similar places too, Jackson works with at-risk youth, Ellis with unions and workers, with the intention of bettering their communities and stopping the cycles of violence that directed their lives. Essentially, the both of them focus on their stories as a redemption narrative. They go from being nothing, to making themselves into something terrible, to remaking themselves as better men. However,…
